Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 5speed interchangeability?

I am getting ready to replace my transmission in my 96 dually. I found a nice unit but it is out of a 98. 5-2001. I know the top cover is different, and actually quite desireable... . but is the rest of the transmission the same? If anyone knows for SURE please let me know before I waste money. Thanks, CHAD

You can make it work...

You will need a shift lever from the 98+ 5sp that connects to the shift tower. The lever is much thinner where it goes through the boot but this can be dealt with pretty easy. You will need to remove the aluminum tail section from your old 5sp as the newer one changed the way you attach the transfer case shift lever (no need if 2wd). Otherwise you should good to go.



I am running a 2000 model in my 96 for about 100K now. Still has the orginal 5gear and nut.
