Not bad

Thats not to bad getting 157000 miles on the fifth gear nut. Some of these guys have only got 20000 or 30000 out of them and have gone through several. So, it must help to keep rpm up in fifth?:D

 I just lost mine the other night only about an hour into my trip home to Indiana from Phoenix for the holidays. Now I have to drive all the way back in fourth too!

Does any one know of any Standard shops in the Phoenix area? I use (and abuse) thrid gear ALOT! between truck pulls and towing loaded wagons; so if they have a reasonable rebuilt transmission rate I'm probably just going to have them sling a whole new (rebuilt) transmission in.

Thanks in advance!

Yes it is in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Thanks for the reply.

Given the time of year it is, and thought of how nice it would be to have over drive for those 1100 miles... I went ahead and got the Chrysler "fix it" kit for $40. A friend and I are going to install it tomorrow so we'll see how long it will last.

If finances are available I'm going to go ahead and put a reman standard trans in when I have my old one out for ANOTHER new clutch this spring. Sometimes you wonder if it's worth all the money to be able to play... then some little sports car and it's arrogant driver get swallowed by a cloud of black smoke and it's then you recall the value of bragging rights. (PRICELESS!)

Thanks again guys!

5th gear nut permanent fix

Just put in a 6 speed! ;) Then all those 5th gear nut problems will be a thing of the past. Its easy to do! Ken Irwin

Believe me... if I didn't like playing with it on the strip so much I'd SERIOUSLY consider it.

I'm not sure what's wrong with it now... . it already had the chrysler "fix it" kit in it but the nut was loose... So I went ahead and replaced it again, but still no fifth. It goes into the detent fine, but when you let out on the clutch there's still nothing there. No shavings or teeth were found in the oil... So it looks like I'm back to Arizona all the way in 4th again.

Does anyone know of a good manual transmission shop in the east valley/phoenix area? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again!

standard transmission

I have a very clean 95 with 90k miles that is a extended cab, 4x4, and it is a auto. I wish I could find some one that was tired of the 5th gear nut coming off as I would gladly trade the auto truck for a truck that is a standard. I could spend the 3. 5k for a automatic, I would rather use the money to get a standard truck.

I am told that the auto is the way to go for those who wont to drag race there truck. For those of you who wont to build a fast truck, please trade me the Slow standard transmission truck. I would be glad to worry about the 5 gear nut.

5th gear

recently did mainshaft & gear replacement on a '99 3500 at the shop, nut was still in place, but shaft was stripped. Knocking on wood, all 5 speeds we have changed to new shaft, gear and nut are still going as far as I know.

I must be a lucky fool.

I just turned 188k on my 94'

no KDP or 5th gear failure

and I pull a trailer about 75% of the time.

The dowel pin problem is a very real concern as the 2 that I have tabbed have been trying to come out and were 1/4 of the way out and its a $3000 job to repair if it comes all the way out and its not that bad to tab it. We did 2 back to back and not having ever done one before it took 4 hours for both trucks.

No the KDP is fixed. My front cover was leaking so when I had that fixed I had the mech. tab it when everything was out. But it hadnt moved at all.

That was about a month ago.
