I'm new to your forum, old to TDR--five years. You've probably hashed out this issue before, but do it one more time for me! Question: The revised-fifth-gear-nut situation--was it a warranty problem that the dealer had to fix for free? I have a '97 diesel Ram. I also pay for the extended warranty. Thanx. Jim

Most dealers will not upgrade your fifth gear nut for free. Even that nut does not guarantee you will not lose fifth gear. IMHO, the best fix is the Standard Transmission fully-splined mainshaft.

Use the forum search feature. It works great and you will find more info than you care to read. :)

Since the factory setup is not what you need, the warranty won't do it for you, unless you get them to do the labor under warranty and you get the right parts--fully splined mainshaft kit--from 1-800-std-tran

Gubby:

Not to knock anybody, but I just installed the third transmission from Standered Transmission. I had my OEM transmission burn up at 196,000 and bought the ST unit for the 5th gear fix. Now Charlie has been very good and prompt at sending me rebuilt trannys to replace with but the install has been on me. Three in 17,000 miles. That's to many. Fifth gear is a fix that will stay with you as for as I can tell. My trouble has been with the rest of the rebuild. I has the cluster gears burn up now I think the input shaft bearing seized to the to the shaft. Last tues. I left for Fort Worth from south of Atlanta to have the transmission replaced and I got to Monroe, La. when it quit again. True to his word, Charlie shipped one to Monroe the next morning for replacement and I replaced the US Gear OD also.

I guess what I'm saying is to keep the OEM transmission and go with the fifth gear fix from ST. In all fairness to ST they can't know all the problems the previous owner had . I wish I had my old one back. Lost the input shaft in that one too. I prolly have $1800. 00 with install fees on the 3 fixes.

Goodluck. :(

If you took care of your transmission, rebuild yours. Because you never know what kind of abuse the other guy put it through.

Companies who rebuild and sell crate transmissions are paying somebody $6 an hour to get them out of the rebuild as cheaply as possible.

Besides, it only has to last 12 months/12,000 miles, know what I mean?

I wanted mine rebuilt, instead of an exchange because I ran better oil than the factory fluid, and changed it often.

It is nice to have a shop let you know what the inside looks like, what parts are questionable, and so forth.

I don't like the exchange bit.
