I hope this is appropriate for the 911 forum, I need info fast even though the truck isn't completely dead...

Well, it finally happened, driving to work up the 7% grade, cruising at 60, about 2000 RPM and CLUNK! 5th gear goes away. Well, from what I've learned here, it's either the 5th gear nut or the 5th gear synchro gear splines. Either way, it's gone.

I've decided I really want the fully splined main shaft, and since I can't handle having the truck down for a week or so to get the parts installed, I went ahead and ordered the rebuilt unit from Standard Trans.

So, the question I've got is what clutch should I replace the stocker with? I've read good things about South Bend. My truck is stock for now, but eventually I'd like to go up to the 280/680 #11 plate.

Thanks,

-cj

cj,

the sbc con-ofe did good service in my 98. 5 5spd. strong enuff to handle xtra added pwr and smooth too

Unless you have a lot of power mods the South Bend Con is a great clutch and good up to 400hp and is smoother than stock.

Thanks for the help folks! I went with the SBC Con-O. With luck, it and the rebuilt trans. will arrive this week and I can get it all swapped this weekend.

Anyone have any tips, etc. for replacing the transmission and clutch (web site, etc. )?

Thanks,

-cj

Let's see... .

Take out trans and xfer case separately. (heavy and big together)

Don't use a ram, jack, or other stuff to spread your frame like a few on here promote. It's just not necessary.

Get your flywheel ground by somebody who knows what they are doing. Set it up before yo get into it. A lot of shops are closed on weekends.

... . all I can think of at the moment.

also,

while you have it apart, you should take advantage of changing the pilot bearing.

I am going to assume that you are changing the clutch release bearing and the pressure plate?

Check for any leaks you are back there and do it right first the time ;)

How much did you pay for a rebuilt unit??

I got a brand new NV5600 from Blumenthal's, for $2350... Just something to also think about. . As far as clutches, I would go with the SBC CON OFE... Customer Service is top notch with them, They stand behind all their products, and Peter is awesome!

You need a serious transmission jack, especially if you pull the transfer case bolted on. Now is a good time to replace the rubber fuel lines if need be. With the transmission and bellhousing out, you have a bit more room. I failed to do this but I think I read that you should dial indicate the bellhousing when you bolt it up. Lots of threads to search out on doing the transmission and/or clutch.

Got it from Standard Transmission in TX, $1250 with their fully splined mainshaft upgrade.

I wanted to go with a better trans, but $$ and time got in the way. The 6-speed would have been OK but I couldn't swing it right now (just had to put a couple grand into getting my swather fixed so I can finish hay cutting).

The transmission I wanted to go with was an Eaton/Fuller RTO-6610. Of course, then you have to go and get a separate transfer case, different bell housing, figure out how to mount it all under there, re-do all the drive lines, add air for the range shift, and probably do a 2 inch body lift. But, then I'd have a really bulletproof transmission with enough gears that I could always find "just the right one".
