5th gear gone again!!! Even after the "set screw" fix from Dodge

This is the 2nd time I will have to replace my fifth gear. It went out the other day while driving normally down the highway, just like the first time. The first time it happened, the dodge dealership in North Vernon, Indiana assured me it would be a one time fix because dodge had a new part/fix. It cost me $740. Well here I am 50,000 miles later replacing it again. I have 160,000 on my truck and I want a long term fix. From my research, it sounds like a new main shaft with longer splines is the answer. Any suggestions from people with the same problem/fix.

I called a transmission shop they said they have been having good luck with two set screws instead of one. Any ideas from anyone, also, they want $450 to fix. Anyone tried the new mainshaft from Quad 4x4 in Montana???

I have the transmission from ST in Texas with the splined shaft. My 5th one. The last one fried the input bearing and the fifth gear came off. I do tow pretty heavy, 15,000, so I can say the fix in not absolute. I feel the 4500 is just not up to the torque of the Cummins. The 5600? In 06, it's gone too. Whats the answer? Just take it as easy as you can with the full splined shaft and replace it when it breaks. The cheaper way. Fix it yourself.

You might want to do a search on this one. Alot of the posts indicate the final fix is weld the nut in place. No more problem. R C Oo.

Standard trans or Bleumenthals fully splined shafts are the right way to go. I've heard that even a small tack weld on the shaft will weaken it. I'm not an engineer , but I do have over 160k on my shaft from ST.

Just ordered the new aftermarket shaft from Quad, I'll let you know. '97 CTD, White, extra cab 142k, no options.

I am no expert but from what I have read and heard, welding is not the fix. You might want to verify this with a professional before you make a decision. Standard Transmission and Gear is a good start.
