i know this topic has probably been covered tons of times but after looking through 35 pages of threads on here i could find anything! anyways i was coming back from pensicola this last weekend back to south florida and i was doing about 70-75 in my 3500 4X4 and then all of a sudden rpms just shot up and i though my clutch let go or somehitng! i pulled over and i had every other gear except 5th! i heard it a common thing i guess? anyways made the trip back doin about 45 mph and 16 hours to get home instead of 8 !

ok so what i am looking for is if theyre is a write up on this a way that someone has done it and had good success or anything of that sort ive changed clutches and done all that im just wondering how hard it is to complete this task and if anyone has any guidence or knows where i could find some to tackle this process! and thanks for any help !#@$%!

As other posts say, your fifth gear nut has come loose. No, not the one behind the wheel, the one in the transmission. First, you can't fix it yourself; you don't have a large enough torque wrench to put it back on. dodge has a kit to help fix this problem. I have had mine done twice. the last fix seems to have worked.
ANOTHER POINT IMO: ADJUST YOUR VALVES. I say this because valve timing determines rotational vibration of the crnakshaft. At low rpm if the valves are not adjusted to be all the same, then valve timing varies and vibration is increased to the driveline. I know Dodge, and TDR experts do not agree with me, but once I adjusted the valves I have had no more problem. I now have 200K+ on ODO.

ok thanks guys i really appreciate the advice unfortunately i went to a couple shops today they told me it would be between 1800 to 2400 bucks to fix it and thats with me pulling and installing the transmission myself! so im just curious whats the price that yall have paid and that would be great if i lived in texas man but i live in south florida so that kinda screws everything up! thanks for the info guys i reall appreciate it any other info would be great!

it cost me $1800 for a shop to rebuild my transmission, new 5th gear, new output shaft, new syncros, thats including R&R and new napa clutch.

$2400 sounds high to me. I paid about $600. I think the price they are quoting you is for rebuilding the whole trans. I don't know if that is needed in your transmission, or not.
I took mine to Dodge dealer. They don't pull the transmission. They pull the backing plate and install a fix-it kit and the gear from there.

Good luck

Rob

+1 for Quad 4x4, I tried the new and improved locking nuts and tack welding the nut back on but finally went to their website and ordered all parts through them. There is a good deal of information on the site. And they will walk you through which kit to get and help you if any problems come up during the rebuild. Check your reverse gear, my 5th gear had come off enough that it galled my reverse gear also. I did all the work my self using their Gold kit I think it was called. It took me about 3 days and considering it was the first time I had ever been in a transmission and was sicker than a dog, I didn't think that was too bad. I had to borrow a dial indicator and a 300# torque wrench and bought some other specialty tools from Quad 4x4. I have about 20K on the rebuild and am happy so far.

You're getting screwed. The frist time mine came off was on a Friday and I had a load on that was a Monday delivery. I was a hotshot at the time. I got home called the Dodge dealer ship, made a deposit on the tools and did the job myself in 3 hours. That was at 52000 miles . When I guit hotshoting I kept the truck ,it's a good one,and pull my 5er to AK and back. In Williams Lake BC the gear came loose again,114000 miles. The Dodge dealer replaced the gear and new nut for $268. 00. US money. That was in 2002. I just can't belive it'll cost that much unless you're gettint a whole rebuild. This truck has had a trailer ,of some kind, behind it 90% of the time. Good luck.

Just a note:: If you've got 2wd, just replacing the nut (which doesnt fix the problem) is a very simpe job, low in cost.

4wd need more parts taken out. I was in a hurry when I lost 5th the first time, so it was a new nut only. Still just a Saturday job, but probly the only time I ever wished I had a 2wd ... .

DIY mainshaft, 3rd gear, 5th gear, nut kit, bearings, and oils, I had ~$650-700 in. I dont count my labor cause I work slow at home :-laf Hard parts from Standard, oil from jegs.
