i was driving on the frw way and the 5th gear slipped out. i think its the nut that holds the gear in place. i need to travel 1000 miles home , will the trans stay togather its on a nv 4500 trans in a 99 dodge 3500 td. help help. and also where to get the parts to fix it thanks

You shouldn't have a problem driving with only 4 gears, been there done that. When mine went out I had a shop re-install it and weld the nut so I could drive the 700 miles to have Quad4x4 do a 6 speed conversion. It cost me about $200 to have the work done to weld the nut.

I would seriously consider doing the Torque King main shaft fix from Quad 4x4. Here's a link for some reading http://www.quad4x4.com/NV4500%20Rebuild%20Kits.htm

I had the same problem with my 98 at 170,000 plus miles. I drove it home from a trip and several more days with no problems. Just think about it: 5th is really overdrive and most cars in the past did not even have overdrive. I chose to have the upgraded nut from Mopar put on and it works just great. I figured that if the old one lasted 170,000 miles, I should get even greater mileage from the improved version.
