I hate to say it, but, Yes it's true. While driving down I-90 tonight, the White Obsession acted like it popped out of gear. The nut was gone.

For those of you that have had this happen, what kind of cost am I looking at for the repair?

transmission cost

Go back to one of the last issues of TDR - don't remember the number. They had an article about the shop that has come up with an improved shaft to help the 5th gear nut. It seems to me they had prices in the article. I would certainly check it out if I had to do mine! ray

Joe, isn't the repair doable for those with a little mechanical aptitude and transmission knowledge? From what I understood the output shaft/5th gear assy could be R&R'd without removing the transmission. I suggested to Big Bob to replace the shaft with the upgraded fully splined unit, since he is quite BOMBed.

Sounds like it's time for a Big 6...

Enterprise Engine has new NV5600's for $2,500.

5th Gear Nut

Big Bob:

Mine went out last fall. The parts (new "split ring" nut, washer, and special locktite) were fairly inexpensive, less than $50, if I remember correctly. I had to borrow the special 5th gear wrench and splined mainshaft socket from a local transmission guy. They are about $70. 00 from miller tools, if you want to order them. The dealer told me that I "had to" replace the 5th gear too, "because it always gets damaged when the nut backs off. " Well, I chose not to, because I had only driven the vehicle less than 10 miles after the nut backed off. As it turned out, 5th gear was in excellent condition, and I did not buy the new one as the dealer recommended ($375. 00). The job took me about 3 hours, with some help from a friend. However, I notice from your signature that you have a 4X4. This will likely add considerable difficulty to the task. I'm sure you can do it, just more schtuff to take off before you get to the problem.

Good luck.

P. S. Torque the hell out of the new nut. Specs call for 275 ft lbs!

Here is the latest. I found a shop that will put the 5th gear nut repair kit on for $230-250. However after reading Joe Donnelly's article in the 30th issue of TDR (page 36-37), I have decided to replace the main shaft with a full splined shaft and 5th gear with the kit that Standard Transmission makes. While the trans is out of the truck I think I will have it rebuilt and be done with it. I've got 90,000 miles on it now and don't want to have to mess with it again.

I got an email into Joe Donnelly, but haven't hear back. Does anyone know where I can get this replacement kit that Standard Transmission has? Or is there someone else that make something better now?

I had thought about doing this in April when I had the clutch put in, wish I would have followed through with it at that time.

Next month I have to have the front axle seal and right u-joint replaced and while they are doing that I will have both seals and u-joints replaced along with the 4 ball joints.

Not exactly what I wanted to be doing, had a few other accessories I wanted to add, but they will have to wait.

You can replace 5th gear and the nut with the trans in the Ram, but you have to remove the trans to change the mainshaft. Get the kit from Std Trans. I keep one around for the occasions when someone going through Vegas needs one--actually I just haven't gotten around to replacing the stock shaft in my spare trans. The splines on the 5th gear are what get worn, more than the teeth. Still, if the mainshaft is hammered by the spline tops, putting on a new 5th gear is probably not worthwhile since it will rock on the shaft anyway after it works in a little clearance--hence tightening the nut a LOT with a hardened washer to minimize that. To do the job optimally, you also need a new set of snap rings from STd Trans ( a small parts kit), or from Mopar. The former costs a little more but has other bits in it that might get lost so it could be worth it. Also comes with a steel shim for 3rd gear instead of the fiber one NV uses.

Hope this helps, Bob.

Joe,

Thanks for the info. I will go the route you have suggested.

Will it hurt anything in the transmission running it the way it is until I can get the parts?

The "White Obsession" is back on the road!

I got the updated mainshaft and 5th gear, bearings and synchros, small parts kit, and a gallon of Syntorq from Standard Transmissions. Shipped 2nd day air. Dropped the WO off Wednesday morning. The package from Standard Trans arrived Wednesday afternoon, right on time. While they had the transfer case out, they noticed that the shaft had about 1/2" of play, the bearing was toast, had them replace it while they had the transfer case out.

Geno's is fantastic! See this post in parts & accessories.

Well just under $1500. 00 later, the WO is back on the road, and feeling good! I almost go into withdrawls when I don't drive it. Shifting is like new!

Front axle seals, ujoints and ball joint next month.

Oops! just saw this thread

Hey Bob, I'm glad to see it turned out OK for ya. When you do come over let me know so I can meet ya at Robs.

BTW, are you going to the Timberline Dodge rally?

..... well at least it wasn't third gear again. :p

..... sorry, I couldn't resist.

Thanks John and Rob. :D

Don't know for sure when Kathy and I will be able to get over there, we'll have to see. We will not be at Timberline. :( We have a youth Olympics with the youth of our church that week-end in St. Maries, Idaho. I've been volunteered (by Kathy) to cook for them.

Have fun at Timberline, well catch you soon. :D
