I pulled my trans today to put in the South Bend clutch and while I was at it I though it would be a good time to replace the fifth gear nut. After pulling the back cover to my surprise the nut was tight and no movement in the gear. I ended up beating on the miller tool with a 40 oz dead blow to get the nut off. My truck is at 98K and the rear cover has never been off. I must be extreemly lucky.

Now for the question there doesn't appear to be any gasket material on the back cover. I am going to use Ultra Blue when I go back together in the AM. Is this the right stuff?

Oh and by the way the AmsOil ser 2000 75W/90 gear lube was still blue after 30K.

Can't wait to be able to use the power I put in last Oct.

I always use the black RTV. It is the only one that says it resist oil. I have had the best luck with it. It is what is on the reat of the transmission.

Drawson, I had the same experience about a year ago when I changed my clutch, checked the 5th gear nut and it was TIGHT at 90,000 miles #ad

Mopar makes a special purpose sealant Mopar part #4318038 gasket maker (comes with the 5th gear nut update kit) that is used between the cast iron of the transmission and the aluminum transfer case. It not silicone. This is supposedly a difficult area to seal because the differnt metals expand and contract at differnt rates. Sorry for the spelling, Havn't had my coffee yet.

tdrmbramr, I tow probily 20% of the time. 75% of it is towing a back hoe. No really long distances with the back just local(with in 50 mile) stuff. But I use 5th at any speed over 55 MPH.

I got it all back together today no big problems. The cross member was a PIA. Clutch holds all my power #ad

Cross members come out hard--remove bolts and from rear- rotate down and forward. Instulatiom is abour the same IF you hold your mouth right--Or have a port-a power to spread the frame---not need thu-tip top to the front, bottom to the rear and rotate& tap as needed. shifter stup shaft removel easy, too thumbs press down & rotate -re-install a rag over retainer and will power. . Grit teeth-- Some where i read 5 spd hard to remove Tip-
after removing cross-member,with a hyd jack place a wood on top of ram and against bottom of front of pan ,raise/a few deg and transmission tower will just skin out of floor pan hole with out bending sheet metal. (Floor pan)
Oh almost forgot my 5th gear nut was tight for just shi of 32k Towing all the time-4:10s and still to this day drop in to 5th around 42 mph. -- 400k and no extened splined shaft and nut as we speak is in place.
