Re: Fifth Gear Nut

In my circle of people, I do not know and have never heard of a truck with a 3. 54 rear end loosing the fifth gear nut. Not saying it doesn't happen. I had the dealer do mine at 60k and they paid for it. I've since had the transmission out due to breakage (pieces of third gear everywhere)and had opportunity to mess with it again. Mine was still tight at 125k. I agree that the dealer nut is a waste of time. Two friends of mine had the dealer put the nut back on twice (4:10's). The third time at about 130k for one of the guys we did it ourselves with the Standard Trans part. Much better nut. We did the fully splined shaft on his, but you wouldn't need it just to upgrade the nut. You can replace the nut without pulling the transmission, but you need a custom socket to get it off.

The guys are right about the transmission work. If you're not tooled and experienced, get help. Go to a local small trucking operation (gravel haulers or what ever) find out if they do their own work. A few hundred dollars and a case of beer can go a long way. Make sure you get references for the guy's expertise though. It's not rocket science. I've done all my work at a place called Chamber's Construction in Kingston, WA.

Hi Dan,

I've got a 97 with 3. 54's and lost the fifth gear at about 20k miles. Have had the "dealer fix" for the last 45k and it has held so far.

Loss of 5 th gear nut

Just read the last post IF ANY one has not heard of a loss of fifth gear nut in rigs with (rigs) commonely know as trucks Dodge mf'g 2500 -3500 94 thru 2001 modle Call Classic transport, horizon trans, Rad transport, Jet Transport, Carraige Mfg, Jayco mfg, Choachman Mfg, Mapleleaf trans, Morgan trans,Just to name a few,Also If no one knowes it a 4500 hd trans mission can be had in a new (gas'er to day as long as it is not behind a v 10 <they suffer the same problem VIB's--

I heard about the problem 2 days after taking ownership of my 96 on june of 96 the reason i joined TDR! But as i was in the truck leasing circle and state of the art tech,we saw things the dealers did, So in my life what was new.

It can be fixed for less $70 (with out labor) Add another 3 hrs and get rid of that input shaft needle bearing ( S B Clutch bushing) last i heard is now or about to be factory installed (valo)and you can drive trouble free in the clutch/transmission area which my ford owners still to this day cant boast about. '

As you can tell i have a 4;10 --235s and drop in to 5 th at 42-45 mph and have he tq & hp to cruise past the big rigs up the hills (could stand more radiator 90-100 deg) 400k with out the loss of 5 th Gear nut... ... ... ... ... ... ... :)

Transport Co's

These transport company's are located in North ern Ind Elkhart-Goshen,middleberry,wakarussa,Just draw a circle around that (20 mile)area and you will find them and the testing grounds for cummins eng's Dodge related, and new bee's. . IF ,Tdr did an on site campain at these sites threr member ship would grow faster than they could add them to there mailing list, and these people come from nation wide day after day,,but so would Dodges short commings mount. Thank god you didnt buy a chev,NO power, No life, Ford ,clutch area a 1200$$ nite mare and no way around it,(parts only). .

Now some would have you beleave before you bought a 5 sp some-one told you to only try to get fuel savings when you were emptyand never tow or haul in overdrive,,DID any one hear that from a dealershipbefore plunking down the green???NOOOOOOO!

Would i buy a 2003 with a 250 hp eng with a nv4500 transmission??

IN a heart beat. . And it wont cost 450 for parts to cure the probleM. .

5th gear nut costs

In reading the posts, I can't find where anyone has mentioned who pays for this. I just had 5th go out, and the dealer wants $800+ to fix it. The Warrantee company says they don't have to pay for it because it is a factory upgrade.

How can both Chrysler and the warrantee company get out of paying for something that is clearly a design flaw and is occuring on a regular basis. Shouldn't this have been a recall????

Has anyone challenged this???

You might want to check out TDR#33, p. 17 for my dyno tests of lubes. I found the Torco RTF interesting. It is rated GL-6, has low drag, and testing this summer towing has shown it keeps the trans temperature down like Castrol does. The RTF is about $40-45 a gallon (vs. $56 plus shipping for the Castrol from Std. Trans. ) So, if you feel you need better than GL-4 rated Castrol, here is another possibility.

The numbers were close but consistent. The full curves showed this, definitely. These drag numbers were in neutral so the overall drag is not high, and all old lube was drained and sucked out with a turkey baster that had a tygon tube attached to get to the back of the transmission case (the drain plug was near the back=lowest part also). The lube was warmed up by power runs so if any slight contamination by a prior lube was occurring, it was mixed and diluted greatly. I estimate that at most a couple spoonfuls could have remained coating gears, etc. and that is not much in a gallon of fresh lube.

We ran a number of trials with each lube and results were very reproducible. As I stated in the article, whatever lube you choose, it is a good idea to monitor the temp relative to diff temp (for a reference point to ambient vs. load) as one of the "selling points" of the Castrol was its low temperature property.
