No. The fifth gear nut just backs off and lets the gear slide back so it feels like you've lost fifth gear. No harm done, just put it back together (with the better lock mechanism of course). The KDP can cause some serious damage to the timing cover and gears in the front of your engine when it comes loose.

fifth gear

 Hey bud, on my 99 nv4500, they went to a nut that has a 1\4" bolt that holds the nut tight. Bad idea. Get the full nut and locktight with red as tight as you can possibably get it and stake it to the shaft with a good sharp punch at 8 locations and it won't move. Mines in the shop corner waiting for the getrag to sureender, but once I got the gearbox, the getrag got better, you figure. Tim

The best solution I've seen to the fifth gear problem is the fully splined mainshaft with the two steel crescents that sit in a machined slot behind the gear. I put one of these in last month and I don't see any way it's coming off. Anthough the healthy dose of red loctite I applied might help it hold position as well. ;)

I tried the nut witht he 1/4" screw a couple years back and it's still holding today as well. Guess the jury is still out on that one.

Tim, where is Ellahurst?

I did the "new" nut fix from DC and staked the crap out of the nut and it came off again 9000 miles later. Now it has the full splined mainshaft and it had better stay put this time.

KDP fixed

I had Scheid Diesel in terre Haute fix mine yesterday. I confused myself when I bought the truck thinking it was fixed because he already had the 5th gear nut fixed. Scheid used the jig method to fix the KDP and they also bumped my timing up to 15. 5 while they were at it. It was there for about 2. 5 hours. Not to bad. Thanks for all the help.

ELLAHURST

:cool Scott, ellahurst is 8 miles west of Cascade Locks in the Columbia River Gorge. A coupe miles east of Multomath Falls. Tim

The best fix for the 5th gear nut problem is to just convert to a 6 speed. I love it, and it has a gear for every speed. Just a thought.

Until it lunches ala' texasdsl's two 6 speeds did.

The 5th gear wears on the forward flange of the shaft and moves off the 1/8" of spline. No amount of locktite or staking will prevent that. The good fix is a fully splined shaft : http://www.quad4x4.com/ read all about it.
