The story starts with my brother-in-law borrowing my '96 to pull a travel trailer on vacation. Bad things seem to happen to brother-in-laws! He lost fifth gear about 200 miles from home. I had the 5th gear replacement done back in October '01 at 105,000 miles when nut let loose. Had Standard Trans gears installed at Performance Transmissions in Angleton, TX and now, 15,000 miles later, it fails on poor BIL.

Took truck to Performance on Monday, got it back on Tuesday. One day!?! Fifth gear had lost a tooth and shelled out like an ear of corn. Standard Transmission replaced faulty gears for nothing, Performance Transmission repaired for the cost of the oil and I got it back in one day! Total charges = $63. 04!!!

We hear a lot of bad things about vendors and shops, but good news is worth reporting.

I would recommend Standard Transmission in Forth Worth and Performance Transmission to anyone. The lead mechanic at Performance, Kevin, knows these Dodge transmissions, both manual and autos.

Just thought you ought to know.....

Good to here someone backing up there product but why would they even charge you for the oil? It makes no sense to me the oil is a very small portion of the job and what do they think your time is worth for having to bring it back? Sorry if this seems off base but it sometimes these things bother me.

I think that's the second post I've read about blown-up 5th gears/broken teeth from Standard Transmission. What's up with that?:(

Has anybody tried Blumenthal Mfg. In Oklahoma City? They sent a flier mentioning there fully splined main shaft that also has a Key slot for the lock nut and the locknut has set screws instead of a pinch bolt like dodge also mentioned are new synchronizers without the cloth type lining these look to be all bronze. I have no trouble building transmissions but want the best parts anybody have horror stories about these guys?

There was a guy at work today telling me about Blumenthal Mfg. He had nothing but praise for them. He was very impressed with their work and their shop. He said they had a patten on their fifth gear fix, i don't know if that is true or not.

This thread will do.

Rather than start a new 5 speed thread, I may as well add to this one.

Dropped 5th gear last night at 125k. Last March, when I did the clutch, I noted some input shaft play so I figured sooner or later I would have to go back in. I did not have the money or time to fix it then. Overall it's been used hard so I have no complaints given the 4500's track record.

Got on the phone this am with Standard Transmission and ordered a 4500 with the "fix". They figure it should be in Pennsylvania on Friday.

Std. Trans supplies gears that are equivalent to OEM. I have heard of, and seen, 5th gear break with original equipment transmissions. Therefore, I do not feel the gears from Std. are inferior in any way. Some of the parts I have bought from them were OEM and others were made by vendors to the OEM.

The midwest pullers have told me, for what it's worth, that the input shafts and main shafts and other 5 & 6 speed parts offered by Enterprise Engine are superior in quality. Those are the ones I'll be selling and installing.
