Several months ago one of our members experienced a disaster with his fifth wheel trailer. While towing over uneven ground into a rural campground one of the spring hangers of his tandem axle trailer separated from the frame and one of the axles swung free and the tire/wheel rolled around under the trailer lifting the entire rig.



His ultimate solution was a new axle assembly reinstalled on the frame as suggested above . . . welded to the underside of a long piece of square or rectangular tubing welded to the bottom of the frame rails. He posted good photos IIRC. Do a search in this forum.



The tubing welded under the frame rails is the way the suspension of my HH is mounted and other quality constructed units are the same. It is a solid, proven method.

There are equalizers available that are longer than the stock ones you are thinking of lowering with the block. We have Henderson rim and wheel here that are trailer specialist and you may have them there to. But if you have it done now be safe. How much higher has these mods raised you trailer? is it a high profile to begin with?

The RV came standard with the Equa-Flex equalizer. I got some good news today. The RV manufacture planned for this case (taller trucks) when they added the second hole adjustment on the outer spring hangers but in addition they built a special bracket kit for the center section that lowers the Equa-Flex equalizer. They just don't install it at the factory as the RV would then be too tall for most folks.

I have placed an order for this kit which will allow me to lower the pin box 2" and should fix it all up.

The added tubing is the way to go.



This is the best possible solution and one that should not be too expensive to accomplish.



I am not so sure about that. I stopped at a local shop in northern California that I new did a lot of trailer work and even built trailers and asked about this. The answer I got was no problem we do that a lot, about $1200. My next stop was the steel supply company tu get 2 pieces of 2 X 4 tubing. I pulled my welder out of storage and did it myself.

Here are a couple of pictures of the way I fixed mine. I have over 8000 miles on it now and no trouble at all. The only thing is I wish I had gone a little higher. But if I put 16” wheels on that will take care of it.

Here are the brackets I found for the center Equa-Flex mount:

Here it is installed, note the paint burnt away, I should put some paint on it. I had to cut the top

opening longer so the bracket would clear the factory weld on the original bracket and fit flush to the frame:

Here are the outer spring mounts, this was a befor pic and now I am using the bottom hole:

They supplied a 9/16" pin same as what was originally used and both holes in the bracket are 9/16"

however there was a glitch! [!]

The upper hole in the bracket was drilled too low so the pin would not go through. If I ran a 9/16" drill

through I would end up with an elongated hole, the available space left was a very tight fit for a 1/2"

bolt so I used 1/2" grade 8 with a jam nut on the inside and lock nut on the outside.



I lowered the pin box 2" and now have 7. 5" bed clearance
