My New Tow Ball

Well after backing my new 3500 into the 5th wheel pin this weekend, I'm thinking a louvered tailgate might be the way to go. Lot's of them advertised however, it is difficult to determine pros and cons based on pictures. Any recommendations?

A checklist? :{

I tried a fabric one and it lasted about 2 years. I wanted to do expendable because I finally got my "tail gate" tool box instead of just a 5er tailgate.

Edit - My tailgate boxes ran about $700 locally manufactured. I plan to have the tailgate on (makes a great tool work bench when needed, I think I will even mount a vise to it on the flat surface) and then the boxes, and a checklist of course.

I had the metal black powder coated one in my 99. Even hit it twice. I liked it. I now have the plastic gate and you can't even step on it when it is down. Won't do that again. I like the looks of the aluminum ones but they are a little pricey. bg

I bought one from JC Whitney. low cost, but stronger than a high $ I bought for a 2000 truck.

Well, I just looked on JC Whitney's web-site and they are wanting $349 for the one I have. I caught it on sale a couple of years ago for less than $300. Must be due to price of steel in China.

I have a chrome V notch for a 2nd gen Dodge. It opens and closes like an original tailgate. If anyone is interested in it, make me an offer. No dents, scratches or damage.

I have one of the plastic Stromberg Carlson tailgates sold thru Camping World and have been very happy with it - it weighs almost nothing and is easy to install/remove. I only use it when I tow the trailer so the fact that I can't stand on it/use it as a tailgate isn't an issue.

I like my companion toolbox that mounts on the rear of the bed. It keeps stuff from falling out the back, costs about the same as a gate and is handy as hell. One of my best add ons.
