5th Wheel Hitches

Reese 5er Hitches

We have been considering selling our camper and getting a 5th wheel, possibly a "toy hauler" so that we can also take the ATV's with us.

In researching 5th wheels, it appears that once you get over about 30', depending on model, you invariably exceed the GCVWR. Yet while we were on vacation recently, I saw many LARGE 5th wheels being pulled by pickups.

I would like any feedback from people that pull larger 5th wheels with their trucks, concerning handling, weight ratings and safety.

Also any input on better 5th wheel manufactures and any info from people with toy haulers would be appreciated.

Mine is not a huge one but I have a 30ft. Terry 5er double slide. My trailer weighs 10,640 with a 2,140 hitch weight. (According to Flying J scales) Truck and trailer total 18,120 with 20,000 being max according to the truck specs with the 3. 55 gears and 6speed. I have no problem pulling mine. I do have an exhaust brake that comes in handy especially in mountains and big hills or just slowing down to exit teh freeway. Hope I helped out a little. Okie

I delivered a 33' Tail-gator XT last week. We tipped the dot scales at about 18,500 with a 2500 2wd shortbed. It pulled and stopped like a champ.

I pull a 33' 5er with 3 slides. My GVW is about 9600 lbs, 800 over truck rating. My GCVW is about 19500. I have absolutely no problem pulling it or stopping it. I do have an exhaust brake, which is handy on steep downhills and a prodigy brake controller. I'm more concerned about the mechanical wear and tear being overweight rather than the safety issues. Wish I had a 3500, but then you have the problem of finding a 5er that will fit it. I just quit worrying about all the naysayers and enjoy my RV.

We pull a 36' triple slide Jayco Designer XL (3610RLTS) that puts us at 10,380 GVW (10,500 GVWR) and 21,180 GCW (21,500 GCWR). If we go to anything heavier, we'll upgrade to a MDT - we'll buy the right tool for the job.
