I am looking at buying a new 5er, (Sandpiper, 30') dry weight is 8714# but, the hitch weight is 1965# which is my concern. Is the hitch weight something I should be concerned with, or am I within the limits with a 2500HD?
The hitch weight seems a little high. My trailer weighted in at 8800 and a pin weight of 1880, and I'm sure that's gone up with my wifes help. My 2500 has no problem and still sits above level and just the front side of the top overloads hitting.
I have owned (3) Ram 2500 diesels with 24v engine, 98, 99, and 2000. All were automatics. I towed first a 25 ft. Jayco which weighed about 9000lbs no trouble. I then towed a 14000 lb. King of the Road 32 ft double slide. While I did not speed up the hills with this, it did the job from Connecticut to New Mexico. I had no problems with each one of these stock vehicles. With appropriate modifications designed for towing, listening to the threads on this site, that vehicle would be an outstanding tow vehicle for that weight.
I traded the 2000 Ram 2500 on an ETH 2001. 5 H. O. 6 Speed. Later learned about these modifications reading the TDR. My wife would prefer an automatic, however, ... ..... and believe me I still here about that today even when I still offer to buy a Ram 2500 diesel just for her. I will be paying that back for a long time in the future.
If I knew the potential of that engine with the automatic especially described in depth in a variety of threads, I might not have traded it, and I would have some peace in my family. But then again... ... ... . maybe I would have done the same thing. I love my 3500 with mods.
I tow a 31' 5th wheel and the pin weight is about 2420#. Your truck is rated for 8800# GVWR, the truck should weigh around 6400#, which leaves you 2400# for gear, folks and trailer pin weight. If your significant other takes as much stuff on a trip as mine, you will be right up there at the GVWR. bg
