I have used 5-30 since 6000 miles. I now have 43,000 + miles. I have some oil sample readings to post. I will keep it simple and only post the fe (iron) readings. CAT states that in they recommend normal oil change in the 125-150 PPM area.

Miles FE NOTES

3027 40 New truck with original oil (15-40 break in)

2855 22 Delo 400 15-40

3118 13 5-30 Amsoil

6257 31 " ( I change filter every 3000 miles)

7263 45 " (changed oil)

3533 19 5-30

8737 35 (changed oil)

7714 24 (changed oil)

4912 12

7920 26 (changed oil)

I now have converted to 15-40 Amsiol (cheaper) but have no readings yet.

Also be aware that reading are influanced on how the truck is driven during that period. Hard towing vs just light steady crusing etc. . Out of 43,000 +miles I have towed 5000 lbs for aprox 15000 miles here in the northwest.

I have found that changeing the filter every 3000 miles and changing the oil between 7500 and 9000 miles works for me. Still lots of good life in the oil could push it to12,000 miles. But I have to have something to do every spring!

Kirt,

I have installed many by-pass oil filters, both "duel-remote" as well as the "single remote". The duel-remote in some instances does make noises due to the extreme oil flow going through the two big hoses and the pressure valve inside the unit. Personaly, I prefer the "single" remote unit as it does not require "full-flow" of oil going through the small 1/4 inch hoses. Both by-pass systems filter the same as far as the bottom line.

I would bet the noise you are hearing is from the oil traveling through these hoses. Try doing as someone mentioned (put screw driver up to mount and put ear on the end) and see if this is the case.

As far as using the 5W-30 HDD, here are the readings from my

last oil analysis on my (old 94') was taken 7-30-02, and had 41,000 on the amsoil 5W-30 HDD oil. (Fe) 76 (Cr) 21 (Pb) 9 (Cu) 3

(Sn) 2 (Al) 10 (Si) 6. VIS @100 C 11. 9 Soot 1. 2% TBN 12. 2. Remarks said "Oil is suitable for continued use", change "Full Flow" oil filter, if not done when sampled, top off system and re-sample at the next regular interval. The total mileage on the engine at the time of sampling was 146,000 miles.

Truck now belongs to a fellow TDR member, as I now have the 03' "Laramie 2500 with 6-speed 4-door.
