Poor Guy,

He hasn't towed with it very much yet. When he gets a few more miles on it he will experience coolant loss and find coolant leaking down the sides of the block from the cylinder heads. It will either suffer a complete destruction or he will take it back to the dealer and find that they will put new heads on it for $3,000 or so which won't repair it. Ultimately he'll find himself buying a complete new engine assembly to the tune of about $16k to $18k.

Ask any Ford Sick. Oh owner who puts lots of towing miles on one.

Not unless he drives it into a tree and totals it and gets the Insurance $$$ :-laf

As part of my job, I had to endure a 2 day official Ford fleet training course on the 6. 0. Aside from the instructor, who was GREAT, that 6. 0 is a disaster. It's sad since the rest of the truck is kinda OK. Even if it had a real engine, I woudn't give my Ram! If that course did anything for me, it showed why the engine has problems.

It continues to amaze me how many of those they sell still. I like the basic truck too. My '99 F350 with the 7. 3 is over 250k now with no problems, probably the best truck I have ever owned. It still hasn't created nearly enough brand loyalty in me to ever even consider the 6. 0 ;)

HBarlo,

Yes, exactly what you had described happened to my buddies 6. 0. Coolent pissin out down the side of his block. He went through 2 trannies and now has to drive around with a gallon jug of coolent to add when it gets low. I guess that those Fords just are not built to take the beating.

my friend just got rid of his 04 6. 0 and whent to a chevy he only had 9,000 miles on it and was on his 3 motor

12300 miles on my boss's '05 6. 0l F250 and it just tossed a rod out the bottom of his second complete engine assembly. The truck has towed 8000# exactly twice. The first engine locked up at just over 9K.

My neighbor, a mechanic, had a 7. 3 Powerstroke. After the eighth transmission, he traded it in on an '04 PS.

He installed an Edge chip & promptly blew it up towing his toyhauler. The dealer saw the box & denied his warranty. He towed it home & rebuilt it, himself. Worked OK after the rebuild but, he was worried about its life expectancy so, traded it in on a new '05'

He installed an Edge chip on the '05 &, again, promptly blew it up, also. This time, the dealer installed a brand new motor & it seems to be working, so far. (Both the '04 & '05 engines blew-up before he had a chance to install his new license plates. )

He is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new 6. 4 twin-turbo Powerstrokes, now.

He likes the Ford product because of the large crewcabs.

I've heard that the later models (05 and 06) are running better but they still have more than their fair share of problems.

Mobius1,

I've heard that, also. And, in defense of the Powerstroke, my neighbor, the mechanic, beats his equipment up, unmercifully. Says, "They're supposed to be able to take that kind of punishment. It's a diesel!".

Joe F. (Buffalo)

It not just the Powerjoke. I had an F250 gasser that was always in the shop or I was working on it. The engine lasted 104K before I had it rebuilt. That lasted 21K before I had it replaced. That lasted 30K. Then I did the right. I bought my first Dodge/Cummins in 1995. Smartest thing I ever did.

From what I am reading about all the problems injectors being replaced, turbo's, fuel pumps, numorous flashes, I don't think that people even know what the problem is with them or are they just that much of a failure?

I heard they run very well if you are lucky enough to see a healthy one!

I was on the flat rate tech forum this afternoon and there is a fellow on there that is bragging about his 6. 0 and how well it was built his defense is he took off the heads and took pictures of the cylinders and that they don't look worn, I cant help but wonder "why did he have to take it apart"?

If anyone would take a look at what's left of the fleet of 25 04's that we have at work. . there would be no doubt why. . ;)

There's tens of thousands of us guys who prefer the Ford Crewcab to the Dodge Quad-Cab who are still driving our older 7. 3 PSD trucks because we've lost faith in the Ford/Navistar 6. 0 liter engine. I just will not buy one. I have no confidence that the 6. 0 engine will perform as reliably nor as long as all the 7. 3's I've owned. I've been criticized as being "stuck in the 80's (50's, really), but it's MY money and Ford ain't getting any of it.

My 2001 Ford F-350 Dually CC LWB has 62K miles on it and it should last me until 2015 or so. By then, I'll probably be dead... . or Dodge (or Nissan or Toyota) will have a real crewcab diesel... . or I'll stick a re-built in and drive it another 10 years.

This is from a guy who's owned Ford trucks and cars... usually 2-3 at a time... for 40 years. If I were to buy a new car today, it would have Honda on the nameplate. Ford has done screwed the pooch on the diesel business.

And it's a sorry shame.

I was at my local Dodge dealership the other day and talked to fellow that just sold his 2001 F-350 Dually with the 7. 3L that had 41,000 original miles for $25K. He put an ad in the paper and a guy bought it over the phone sight unseen! The fellow said he should have listed it at $28k.
