Duramax Dyno Numbers

I have just purchased a 1984 Suburban 3/4 ton 4x4 with the 6. 2L diesel. The engine runs great and has 163,000 miles on it. My question is does anyone know what the factory HP and Torque numbers were for this motor? I am also wondering what gear ratios were offered with this combo? This truck is taking the place of my Dodge pickup since we are expecting are third child and the Dodge backseat is already crowded with two car seats. Why can't they build a large SUV with the Cummins? Base it on the platform that are trucks are based on and watch them fly off the showroom floors. Both the wife and I love the Cummins engine but hate the lack of interior room. Thanks in advance for any help. I still plan on keeping my TDR membership because this is a great site with great information.

Well, I used to have a 6. 2 in my truck, so I might can help you a little...

There are two different versions of this engine Vin C and Vin J... it being a 3/4 ton you probably have vin J. (Vin C is lighter duty, more emissions control, and slightly different heads. )

I believe the numbers for the J are 145 hp and 260 ft/lbs of torque.

The suburban sometimes came with the 3. 73... but the 3/4 ton probably has 4. 10's, and I assume the turbo 400 transmission? (3 spd no OD)

If you can afford it, the Banks Sidewinder turbo helps a lot, althought there are a ton of things you can do to a naturally aspirated to help it run better.

I had a sidewinder kit on my truck before I put a hole in the side of the block.

(That's when I swapped in my isuzu. )

Anyways, good luck with that suburban, the 6. 2 is actually a pretty good motor if maintained frequently and in light duty applications. In heavy duty applications it is gutless and wears out fast...

I would highly recommend The Diesel Page.com

They have quite a bit of good information on the 6. 2/6. 5/6. 6 and there are some good guys on the forum that will answer your questions.

Sorry about having to sell the cummins...

Good Luck

(Sorry if I rambled. )

Thanks for the reply DT. The truck actually has a 4 spd auto with OD. I have already submitted my appliction to The Diesel Page and am waiting to hear back from them.
