Typical PSD driver???

How many 1st Gen's on this site?

I am helping a friend with his 6. 2, he knows even less about them than I do, and I don't know squat. I took off his air cleaner top and the area that would the clean side of the top is coated with black carbon. Anyone know why that is. It looks like the inside of a gasser tail pipe that is running rich. This truck is a 1985 GMC. I cannot find the fuel filter, where do they hide that, under the saddle tank shields? He also is having problems with over heating and low power, but I would guess that is because of no turbo and dragging around a big old glass boat up steep grades. I did tell to service the cooling system and get the auto fluid changed. Any help and ideas would be great, thanks.

Is this truck a half or 3/4 ton?

If it is a half ton, and even some three quarter tons, it has egr. Is there a round hole in the middle of the intake, does it have what looks like a vacuum diaphram sticking up in the middle of it? If that is gone, the exhaust can come straight up through special passages in the intake, and dump directly into his intake.

This would explain the overheating and low power. (Besides the fact that the 6. 2 is gutless. :D :) :p )

I have an intake for a 6. 2 that eliminates the egr BS that I would be willing to sell him if he wants it. (And actually, all heavier duty vin "j" vehicles had an intake without egr. ) (The light duty is vin "c")

The fuel filter should be a canister type on the passenger side firewall. Older 6. 2's ('82 - '83) had a screw on filter type on the firewall and a secondary screw on type filter mounted on the back of the intake manifold.

Any questions?:D :D

DT, thanks for the quick response, I am 40 miles away from the truck so I need some time to check on what you answered with but I will do that ASAP. Pretty sure we are dealing with a 2500 but need to call this evening. Thanks, I will get back to you... . Jim

The first thing that should be done is to pull the intake off and clean it out with a real good degreaser.

The next thing would be to get a new set of intake gaskets for the same engine in a 3500 of the same year.

You do not have to get a new intake manofold to get rid of the egr. All you need {it's been awhile?} is a frost plug to plug the hole where the egr went in the intake. If I remember right the size is 1 53/64.

Take this frost plug and run red loctight around the edge. Then lay a piece of wood across it and tap into the hole until level.

The truck will run better for sure but a trip to an injection shop to have the injection pump timed will make a world of diff on milage, power, starting and it will run cooler.

Don't forget to plug off the vacume lines that went to the egr.

Hope this helps.

Watch out for a carboned up intake... I have seen valves ruined because of a stuck EGR valve on the LD 6. 2. Depending on how much carbon there is, I would consider stripping the heads off the engine and get them cleaned up.

No,No, No, you all have it wrong.....

None of these guys have a clue. Here's what you do... . yank the motor and weld some chain to it. Then toss it off the boat when you need to stop. Now with a empty engine compartment you just need to find a ISB at a junkyard and drop it in. Look at that, just three steps is all it takes. :D :D :D

Boat anchor

L. M. A. O. ,Good one. I know a guy right now thats got an older 7. 3 with pinholes(cavitation)in the block. He asked me about what he should do. I said "a 12 valve cummins will fit right in there";) :) ... Doug

Every 6. 2 I've seen had the fuel filter on the firewall. Mine had one on the firewall and one down under the intake manifold in front of the vacuum pump. I'd give the 350 olds diesel boat anchor status, the 6. 2 is more of a yard ornament... :)

hey... . the 6. 2's were not bad... we had one in our old g20 van that had over 600,000km [±375k miles] on it and the motor was never taken apart. it was a work truck for the first 50,000k that my pop had and he beat the **** out of that motor as soon as he got it [best way to break in an engine... combustion pressure seats the rings good:D :D :D ] never used a drop of oil, but the oil cooler lines sure did leak [common problem w/gm] couple of alternators, a vac pump and 2 injection pumps. it's at the wreckers now i believe. . sold it to a family friend, who sold it to another family friend, who sold it to some guy, who wrecked it 2 weeks later. .

My old 6. 2 is approaching 300,000 miles - but was rebuilt and turbocharged at 170,000. Even turboed and the pump turned up, a stock 2nd gen would leave it in the dust. I did dust a stock 1st gen with it.

MY 6.2

I baught a 83 just for LOUD PIPES it wouldn't get out of its own way blowing smoke(heavy black) really bad bypassed egr ran better got rid of pluged queit mufflers ran better and louder than found none egr manifold installed it runs quiet good now and it is loud snap crackle pop it is just a beatter and ticket getter so I am happy as one can be with a 6. 2 rattle trap there not bad for putsin around they can't do much work!
