Cummins Diesels from the '40s

A buddy of mine has a Chevy '94 1500 with a 6. 5TD. He's wondering if there's anything cost effective mods to get the power up. I'm not sure what's out there, and I d@mn shore ain't gonna pay to get on TDP.

Any advice is welcome. TIA.

yeah... ... ... . sell it and buy a real truck with a real diesel.

I got some real good advice one time on 6. 5s. If they run good dont buy it or if ya own it, sell it because somethings about to go wrong.

Besides their a major PITA to work on. I've replaced my fair share of 6. 5 pumps. And besides how do you thing Standyne got so rich? By selling rebuilt 6. 5 pumps and all the parts for em.

just my . 02

There is a Chip for the 94 and up 6. 5's. My son had one and put a chip in it and it really made a difference.

94 is mecanical pump iirc [93-94 mechanical, 95-99 electronic]

first off, take off the plastic turbo power cover and disable the egr valve right under it [remove vacuum line, insert #6 panhead screw into vacuum port on valve, reinstall vacuum line].

for power, you can tweek the WG a bit to get more boost [keep it under 15 at all times], and advance the timing a few degrees and maybe turn up the fuel a bit. opening up the exhaust will also help [kennedydiesel.com sells some nice 3. 5" systems for the 6. 5td trucks, he might have some 4" systems too]

for a good free GM diesel forum, check out the dieselplace forums

Was there a difference between the Stanadyne pumps on the 6. 2 and the "mechanical pump on the 6. 5? If there is no difference, those things are easy to turn up.

the 6. 5 na/td mechanical pumps are stayadine pumps too [very similar if not identical to the 6. 2's]... the electronic ones are also stayadine made [says so on the pump]

6.5 Performance

My buddy had a 95 chevy with the 6. 5 turbo diesel and we installed gauges and a hypertech chip and 4" exhaust and wow what a difference that made, the biggest thing was the boost was really low 2psi and we adjusted the wastegate to 15psi and man it came alive, best running 6. 5 i was ever drove. Oo.

All 94's north of the border were eletronic injection pumps. They were a real problem. Bd and others sold a couple of different chips to switch out the factory chip in the ecm for more power.

Going by memory [and it's been awhile] The latest 6. 2 pump was a 5056 stanadyne rotary and the 6. 5td was a 4911. The 5056 would keep increasing fuel till govenor cut of while the 4911 would increase very little at all above 2700 [from memory]. The 5056 was a decent pump but was not bullet proof and the 4911 had head and rotor troubles. [$$$]

15 psi is too much for the 6. 5td even with an intrcooler added on.

I had a 1995 1500 2 door Yukon with a 6.5

I put in a "BD" brand "RV chip" then went to their "Race chip" It ran great. I think the chips were only about $200 each back then... Huge HUGE difference.

I only drove it for 38,000 mile before buying my first Cummins. Never had a bit of trouble in those 38,000 miles. But it was only 38,000 miles.

For how long? About a week till it let go? My snowmachining buddy has one. Tossed the crank while towing his enclosed trailer. Went and bought another 6. 5TD engine to drop in. Some people just don't learn.

Those Detroit Knocking Diesels are a pile. My advice, sell it and get the same year Cummins the 6. 5TD is. He will be blown away by the difference. Otherwise baby the engine, they can't handle much.
