Yes it has been done successfully, but since then Dodge has released an improved version of the 5. 9L air filter... it is double thick like the one for the 6. 7, but fits in the oem 5. 9 box.

You can check out these threads for more info--

I am pretty sure that Genos carries the new type of filter, though it is somewhat spendy... .

kblranch,

I installed the 6. 7l system in my 06 and provided some details in thread #208253. The mounting of the 6. 7 is the same as the 5. 9 and the hose connection to the turbo inlet is the same and in the same location but, as has already been mentioned, upper and lower housing as well as duct and resonator from air cleaner to turbo is all different and none of the individual pieces are interchangeable. The 6. 7 l resonator is a lot easier to remove the guts and the clean air hose is a slightly smoother run. The cool blue hose for the 6. 7l, if one exists, would be even nicer. I did modify the internals of the upper to get rid of the tube extention for straightening out the airflow to the mafs and I chopped the guts out of the mafs and made it into a straight plug. I used the air temp sensor from the 5. 9l. I added a home made cold air inlet as well.

I "found" a 6. 7 stock air box and tried it in my 03. As mentioned there are several differences. One that I didn't see mentioned is the opening that goes against the inner fender being bigger on the 6. 7 housing. Therefore it doesn't seal against the fender. That could be fixed easily. With the new bigger 5. 9 filter being available from Dodge I'm not sure if it's worth it now? Shadrach

They exist, Bryan at DPP(Diesel Power Products) has them.

Thanks for all the great info. I like the idea of the bigger intake hole and large filter. Before I change it out tho I think I will look at the new 5. 9 filter. Thanks again.

When I was trying the 6. 7 housing in my truck I took pics. First comparing the 2 housings: 6. 7 on the left 5. 9 on the right.

Next comparing the outlet openings. 5. 9 on the left 6. 7 on the right.

From above. The air restriction gauge is in a different spot, the hinges are on the opposite side of the lid and the sensor is mounted slightly differently. 5. 9 on the left and 6. 7 on the right.

Here you can see the 6. 7 has a bigger air inlet opening when mounted in my 03 truck.

With the air box removed looking straight down. If you are going to add a cold air intake tube this is where it would go:

Since the 6. 7 filters are easier to get ( for now ) and since I am going to be mounting a Kilby on board air system ( the air restriction gauge will be in the way ) I will see if I can " find " a 6. 7 hose - air box to turbo. Hopefully it doesn't get in the way of the Kilby. Shadrach

The cool blue (and black and red) hose for the 6. 7 looks like it has a 3/4 inch hose going to it? Whats that for?

I believe that hose is for the PCV system that was introduced with the 6. 7. You just need to put a plug in that hose close to the main tube.

As well, if I recall, the air temp sensor on the 6. 7 has a different connector than the 5. 9 and it mounts with only one screw. The 5. 9 has 2 mounting tabs but can be installed in the 6. 7 cover with just 1 screw.

If you look at the inside of the cover, that big outlet tube has been extended inside the cover to provide a straight path for the mass air flow sensor. This extention can be removed for better flow since the 5. 9 doesn't use MAFS but you still need to plug the hole, which can be performed by a chopped and filled MAFS. I have an extra MAFS if this is missing from the used box you get.

The one box I ended up with, didn't even have a restriction indicator - the hole was filled in.
