JFranklin,

In late 1989 I ordered a 1990 4x4 CTD with the Getrag and loved it. It took a while but once it started to loosen up, about 20,000 miles or so, I was getting an honest 22-24 mpg on the highway . The family grew so I picked up a 1993 Extended cab, 4X4 with the 518 auto. This one also took a while, about 20,000 miles or so, to get the mileage up to about 20- 21 on the highway.

I still have the 93 and it has over 220,000 trouble free miles.

Around the first of the month I took delivery of a 2008,4X4, Quad cab, with the 68rfe and 3. 73 gears. This truck, stock out of the box, gave me a hand calculated 18- 19 mpg on a 500 mile trip with my speed anywhere between 65 and 80 miles per hour. If the truck is doing this well now, I have nothing but praise for the engine and trans combo, as this truck is far ahead of where the other two were prior to the 20,000 mile mark.

As far as having to drive it always on the highway and to avoid driving it on short trips, I don't really subscribe to that. Yes a good long run getting the engine, and all the drivetrain up to temperature and getting some hot exhaust through the DPF is ideal, but not totally necessary.

Our fire apparatus doesn't often run more than a couple of miles at a time so there you have it. The latest have the 400 hp ISL's in them and they seem to do just fine.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is based on my experiences with the vehicles that I have driven, and there have been a lot in the past 32 years, Dodge and Cummins hit a home run with the latest version 6. 7.

Nobody's nockin the C&C's They got those figured out pretty good.
When I was looking into the C&C in November of 06, there were many negitive threads on the new 6. 7 which at that time there were only the 305 HP version, and all kinds of rummers as to the new HP for the 07. 5 and is why I waited. I ordered it in January of 07 and still had no idea what to expect the HP would be. Well now we know what that is, and yes the C&C has had no issues, but the only documented test of the C&C was member EB, which at that time he had 50K on the dial. The reason for the negitive posts were the new emissions crap in which you would read as follows, "I will buy the 07 before they change out the 5. 9", on many different threads and posts.

RGrizzle: You are correct about that, and the TDR does not edit out posts that are negitive like TDP and TDS does, and then on those other sites the members gang up on you when you speak the truth unlike here on TDR. The moderators will block you out until all the biased members finish posting what a troll you are and what a terrible person you must be. Then three days latter they ask you back, in which I replied "GFYS". I only visit now so as to see what problems or success they are having and keep it to a minimum because every twenty threads will be a testimonial (commercial) as to what a great truck it is, when someone buys them, when you know it is just another commercial, they only change the name.

catoiler- Take it easy!!! One of the reasons I participate in this forum is because I believe in the free exchange of ideas. I have been around long enough to know that just when you think you know all there is to know, you suddenly find out that you don't understand all that you know. I think that's your issue!

As a heavy equipment mechanic, I believe that's excellent experience for finding out about diesel engine technology, but it far from makes you an expert on internal combustion engines. My admonition to you is don't go around telling people that they need to learn how an internal combustion engine works. In other words, don't throw stones when you live in a glass house.

BTW, I think "mechinic" is spelled m-e-c-h-a-n-i-c.

Respectfully,

JFranklin,

Based on what I know, from the only folks I know with a 6. 7 in the real world, I wouldn't hesitate to get one.

Why are you poking folks in the eye with a sharp stick?

What is all the :-{} about? it all amounts to BS anyway in the big scheme of things. I had a itch once, in my truck and it was DCs fault because it didn't come with a back scratcher; then neither have any of my other tucks, so I think I'll whine and moan like a little girl and get you gals all excited. All because I'm board at the keyboard and need drama in my life. :-laf

Get a CLUE! and a life :--)

very mature and informative response. thanks, john

so true

RVTRKN: ... It has been a awesome truck and has a lot of torque to haul my bed all over the city and highway...

How do you keep the sheets and comforter on the bed from being blown off? I like the idea of carrying my bed around where ever I go. I like my bed a lot better than those one's at Quality Inn or Roadway Inn.

Oo.

(Just thought I would lighten this thread up a bit)

Never said I could spell! I don't claim to know all but maybe someone can explain why it is that everybody thinks they must be used as a piece of heavy equioment? they are a pick up and should be able to be used as such. funny thing is my wife asked if I can just pull off the junk that makes it get bad milage and replace with after market parts? this is the same person who told me when I got this one no more playing with the motor leave it stock. maybe she is on to something. I have never had one of my trucks pick up any noticeable differance in milage after going over 20,000 or more miles. When I pulled the dpf off to put the lift kit on they were spotless inside no sign of plugging.

We (citizens and manufactures) didn't ask for them to change the smog setup in which you must now operate them like that now.

rweis: The bed doesn't get messed up because it only has 305 HP:{

I am happy with mine at 8200 miles. It is such an improvement over my 97 3500 - better ride, more power, better brakes, exhaust brake. I do not dread pulling my 14,000 lb 5th wheel trailer now!

My nieghbors 2008 F-350 6. 4 crew cab dually 4x4 gets 6. 3-8 mpg loaded and the best it's done emty is 12. 5... ... ... ... hand calculated. His overhead usually shows it to be 1/2 mpg better. It does have 4. 30 gears but he is not happy.

I was out the other night with him test driving new Dodges. :-laf:-laf:-laf

Will have to show him this thread as I have not read about mileage you all have been getting. Is good to hear!

Mine runs great and gets 17 hwy, 15. 5 mixed @ 20,000 miles. New EGR last week and new turbo this week. Should cure the CEL blues... I hope. But runs great other than that... and still better than my 7. 3 PS.

I love mine also. Had a few 245a codes no big deal. That being said, if I baby it on the highway about 65 mph I can get 16 to 16. 5. I usually get around 14 mpg period. I would trade my 04 six speed in a heartbeat for this truck again. I do wish It got better mpg's though. 28000 miles.

Bought mine in August. I have 9980 miles on the clock. No problems. I had a 2004 5. 9. Only put 40,000 miles on it. The 2004 averaged 15-18 mpg. The 6. 7 averages 14-17 mpg. Only took it back to the dealer for a 5,000 mile oil change and the latest recall. I'm very satisfied with the truck. I'm not happy with $3. 349 diesel fuel. Can't wait for warmer weather to get here to start hauling the boat around the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

I have 3 other 5. 9's love them. My 6. 7 has been plagued with emission related problems since the first week I had it (see my other posts ) . I pull A backhoe on a 25' 20,000lb GVWR Equipment hauler on a sporadic basis, I also pull a fuelcart around which weighs maybe 5,000lbs. I drive 20-30 miles per interval. Now tell me Did I buy the wrong truck or does the way I drive exceed this trucks capabilites. I can tell you this I had an 04 duramax for 3. 5 years without any problems justdoes not have the longevity of a Cummins and All I've heard is how much better the new 6. 7 is. My other cummins are driven the same way so Don't tell me this truck is being used improperly. I agree since I am not running up and down the freeway wasting fuel on regens the truck may have some design issues but that should not be my 46,000. 00 problem ... . By god my trucks have to work to earn a spot in my stable. My dealer has told me that my problem is rampant and the cummins engineers and dodge engineers are scrambling. My truck was purchased to earn a living... and it is not doing it yet. I am sure that the entire truck other than the emissions crap is top flite.

These trucks were designed to work. I think you have a "lemon". JMO

My buddy bought an '08 F-250 PS around the same time I got my '07 Cummins and we compared mileage. He was very upset. He was averaging about 8 in the city and 12 on the hwy. A few days later he traded it in on a '08 Cummins. I was totally amazed cause he was one who always trashed talked Dodge, but now he owns one and is loving it. I do have to admit that his Ford looked nice though.

I take it, you alerted him to TDR so we can hear from him, from time to time, to see how he likes it.
