Hello all,
My first post to the TDR - after months of reading & following the most resourceful info anywhere related to our trucks - without a doubt!
I'll give an abbreviated dialogue of my 6. 7... ... .
Purchased my '07 3500 6. 7 Dually (build date of 2/07). It ran like an absolute winner after following the specified break-in procedure - upwards of 17 MPG early on, while pulling 10,000 to 12,000 LBS nearly all the time after the initial 1000 mi.
The truck is a company vehicle which hauls bulk steel & delivers communications towers east of the Mississippi.
Mileage slowly began to creep down - 14, 12, 10, even 8 MPG - regardless of loaded / unloaded conditions - over the course of the next 3,000 to 10,000 miles.
Initial oil change with filter was done at 1,000 miles, then every 5,000 miles afterwards.
Two instances noted of truck stalling while idling (mild outside temps with warm engine block) and one case of full engine shut down while driving uphill under near 100% engine load. Also cases noted where lengthy time (10+ seconds) was required to start the truck - even while fuel & engine block were both warm.
CEL light first came on approx. 8,000 miles (P-2262 code pulled - turbo boost pressure not detected). Later, the truck took a new Holset turbo at approx. 18,000 miles (with a throttle position sensor) after the turbo was granted to dealer after a STAR parts restriction for a number of weeks. The replacement turbo had the same part # as the original. The new turbo had no effect on the mileage.
The mileage did improve *very* slightly after the G30 with replacement of the oxygen sensor, but truck is still 11-12 MPG tops - hand calc'd - regardless of speed, or loaded / empty. It's always fed ULSD with no additives. Part of me is actually happy with this current mileage, because I dread seeing the 8-9 MPG numbers again!
Truck now has 22,000 miles on the odo.
Finally learned from my dealer a month or so ago they have replaced exactly 50% of turbos on the 6. 7's they have sold to date (I presume these are the '07's and not the '08's to which they are referring).
My shop (where the truck lives) is at 2,600' elevation, but I see no difference in mileage / performance wether up here, or down off the hill at lower elevations.
Absolutely no complaints on the torque of the 6. 7 with 6-speed manual trans - I can pull most any hill 70-mph running at full gross weight and it's rare I need to touch 5th gear - even running long interstate drags at 6-7% grade, but wow it's an expensive ride.
I researched the lemon law route, however here in PA there is a major difference in bottom-line settlements for commercial trucks versus personal trucks, so I ended the "soon-to-be" persuit after realizing it just wasn't worth it for me.
Both dealers I've been seeing are great to work with through this (both small town dealers), though I get the vivid impression from seeing the looks on their faces that this is just as much a learning curve for them as it is for us... .
I'm not one to buy & sell a truck at the drop of a hat, but I have nearly talked myself into selling this 6. 7 while the warranty remains.
Dan
