Where in San Diego do you live? . . I lived in El Cajon. . . Went to Grossmont High.

Yeah I enjoyed the weather and everything there too. Got real tired of the Tijuana mexicans. . Winter time down there got to a low of 30. . and no snow at all. except for the mountains then every big, lifted, big tire 4X4 would go up to sunrise highway and get turned around because they didn't have chains!. . lol ... what a laugh.

C50 and Big Block

The above posts are all true stories. If you have never hauled with an old F600 straight truck you are not a true trucker:)

Nick

The very first truck I ever drove was a Chevy C50 with a big block gasser, 5 spd and 2 spd rear axle. Loaded with bedbugs (Household goods) we could get almost 25K lbs. That big block would roar! The ride was bouncy cause the front seat was just a thinly padded bench.

Then I graduated to a 26 ft box on a Cornbinder 1800 with huge gas V8 and 5/2 trans which we could get to 30K. Same bench seats though...

The pinnacle was the Mercedes Benz 1116 with 170HP turbodiesel and straight 5 speed. That was a nice truck with a beautiful ride.

I lived @ 1830 Wolviston Way, San Diego, 92154 it was just east of Imperial Beach. It was the area generally thought of as Imperial Beach but was actually a San Diego zip code. It was in a nice little residential development real close to the old now-closed Imperial Beach helicopter base.

I grew up in Texas but left Texas at the age of 17. I did my last assignment on a submarine tender at Point Loma and retired from the Navy in San Diego.

The first truck I ever drove was a '56 Ford dump truck in 1956 when I was 14 years old. It was probably an F-550 with a gas V8 and five speed transmission and two speed rear axle. A kind neighbor ran a dump truck for a living. He and his wife never had children and I guess he missed being a father. He took me with him on a workday several times in the summer and let me drive the truck a few times with him sitting in the passenger seat. The first time I ever drove it was fully loaded with probably only five yards of dirt coming out of the pit. As I look back I wonder why he was so trusting. I was just a kid.

14 years was a good time

I drove (unofficially of course) for the first time at age 14 in California. It was a 63 Comet with a slant 6 and 3 speed on the column. The trusting instructor was my older brother. If I remember my Dad's story, he also drove at 14 for the first time in Indiana via a 29 Model A.

Ken

Sorry Ken, a Comet could have an inline six or a small V8 but not a slant 6. The slant 6 engine was a Chrysler engine, unique, and only installed in Valiants and other Dodge/Plymouth cars.

I got my driver's license at age 14 in August 1956. Fourteen year olds could obtain a regular driver's license in Texas back in the '50s. It was probably wild kids like me who racked up numerous traffic tickets that eventually resulted in the minimum license age becoming 16.

My first car was a 1928 Model A Ford rumble seat coupe purchased for the grand sum of $25 in summer of 1956. It ran fine but the mechanical brakes were worn and misadjusted and it didn't stop very well.

Thanks Harvey, I was remembering my friends Valiant that had a slant 6. The Comet was an inline 6 and the first thing that we did when we got it was put a new clutch in. That car would buck like a bronco with the new grabber. Made for fun learning.

Did you see my 911 post. Damn if the O-ring on the fuel filter drain tore to pieces when I unscrewed the drain. Made a mess on the driveway. Gone to dealer to get a new one in the AM, Autozone had nothing in the right size.....

Ken

Some class 8 Ford trucks used slant 6 Cummins 855's back in the 70's. Never was quite sure why. They were ugly!

Yeah, I read it.

I routinely drained a small amount of fuel from the fuel filter cannister on my first Dodge-Cummins but soon decided it was an unnecessary step. I never drained the cannister on my '06 while putting 230k miles on the odometer and have never drained my currrent '08 with 74k miles. I'm changing the filter now at 10k intervals.

That interval would take care of any water. The dealer is putting in the upgraded housing with the 5 micron filter today.
