Anothre EGR problem 1500 miles after turbo replacement

Well now that the Smarty is in on #5, the EGR is out, the AirAid is Clean and the oil changed. The added HP and the changed timing really perked her up. I have to admit the CTD is still the Big Dawg! I haven't thrown a code since updating the ECM with the Smarty and the amount of smoke is still minimal! (Many Thanks Marco)! (I noticed with the BADP I was blowing some significant smoke where accelerating hard)

The BADP kit did get rid of MOST of the Regens but still threw codes weekly. Lesson learned the box is disconnected.

My Mileage is about 20+/- MPG and as high as 23 - 24 ( in USG on the over head) with a light foot and keeping the speed down... REALLY HARD TO DO. . The occasionally urge to walk by a Ford chugging up a hill is SO Hard to Pass Up! :-laf Worth the extra fuel!

Given the extra HP and the added weight of the 3500 vs the ol D250. . Not bad...

I did give the #0 a try on the Smarty... Good fuel economy I think I only lasted just long enough to need a coffee and switch back to #5.

Of course I can't walk past another RAM without mentioning the updates and improvements. Most guys are really interested in the benefits until the ask about warranty. Hmm when is warranty a bad thing? When the stock settings and EPA mandated devices kill your MPG and Performance. #@$%! I still question a system that burns fuel and reduces your fuel economy as being a Green Solution. The propeller heads needs to sort that out soon.

Oh. . My neighbour dropped in yesterday with his big Ford 6. 4. . Must weigh a ton more than the 3500, but it was a dually! Looked at his fuel consumption - Sitting at about 20. 5l/100Km... . That works out to about 11. 5 MPG US empty, and his DPF was giving him issues too! We had been hauling round bales and the Ford just couldn't keep up to the CTD. Acceleration was terrible and it must have been using a fire hose for a fuel line.

So I am finally thinking (touching wood of course) that the 08 might live up to my 93. Too Bad Chrysler doesn't.

Harrison,

I'm not familiar with the aftermarket products available. Can you list the parts needed to remove the hardware and eliminate the codes?

I assume a Smarty module is not available for the C&C engine?

Hi Harvey -

BADP provided the DPF/CAT Delete exhaust + Module for the ECM. I pulled the module and went with the Smarty S6. 7 :) and then added the EGR/Cooler delete( 4 plates and a brass plug/clamp). Not too bad of an install. Still need to remove the BADP module but it is disconnected. Still have the muffler on, but might consider a 5" turbo back:-laf. AirAide air intake.

I don't think the Smarty is available for the CC yet. Marco has been great and probably has posted the status.

H

Thanks, Harrison. I'm not real optimistic that a Smarty box will be made available for the C&C application but once the truck is out of warranty and the DPF is needing replacement it might be tempting to spend my money for increased power and fuel economy instead of another soot collection can.

Saturday I downloaded the SMARTY with the 14me software it is awesome. Was running 12me. I have only run the vgt setting on 4 and spools very fast. 3 is supposed to be the mpg setting I believe. Right now I have been running sw 5 with all else at default except the vgt. I haven't run a full tank yet to see if my mpg's are down.

Driving sedately on the typical run from home to work on #3(about 20 miles) I've seen as high as 23. 5 MPG on the overhead (thats @110K/hr) No smoking. . No hammering. I know that readings aren't that accurate but it is consistent depending on head winds too! ! typically would see as low as 12MPG when regenning stock, got 18 maybe when running BADP w/o DPF but no smarty. I popped it back to 3 to see how much difference it would make...

I did a trip from Calgary to Regina on #5, taking it easy and squeezed 590 miles out of the tank before the low fuel light came on. Had to struggle to get 400+ miles per tank stock.

Diesel Truck Inspections in Texas.

Just found out that in Texas that diesels will be inspected for emissions compliance next year and if components are missing or altered it will not pass .

Dont know if they will sniff the exhaust or not, need to talk to my guy about that and find out more details. Allways save your old parts in case you need to reinstall them. I have a muffler delete on a 08 6. 7 2500 and can replace or upgrade it from stock it ,if needed for compliance

Me too. . Although I broke a clip on the butterfly valve connector!!

SoapBox... WTF do these bureaucrats get off madating BS that effectively increases the fuel consumption and by inference the pollution that results from not only my internal combustion engine but all the other steps from the ground to my tank?

My vehicle produces less smoke, gets better fuel economy and doesn't throw CEL codes now. The propeller heads in the Goverment need a does of reality here.

End of rant

I have an 04 that now needs a test to get new tabs... . This year the renewal came with a warning not to bring the truck in unless all the equipment was in place...

Harvey..... I've now got 75K on our 08 5500 and its been great... . no codes, just a recall for the Dash Silencer Pad which we've yet to do... still we can't tell when it goes through the re-gen process... . How's yours doing...

hwebster... . this BS is coming from CA-BAR where they know more than engineers do... . after all, their in the state with all the fruits and nuts... . (California Bureau of Air Research)

Austin Diesel, I'm not pleased to hear that news but I guess I shouldn't be surprised with the new socialist administration in place in DC enacting all their goofy tree hugger and liberal utopian ideas. Could you ask your source for some printed text describing the new details and post it here?

Jelag, mine has 53,000 miles on the clock now and has been perfect so far. It pulls strong and the Aisin six speed is the best transmission I've ever owned. I reported a CEL and a code set last September. I hooked up my heavy fiver and traveled 300 miles to my dealer I parked the trailer in an RV park and turned off the truck. An hour later I restarted to run an errand and the CEL was cleared. It was apparently corrected by the 300 mile workout and has never returned.

When I read threads like this with Harrison Webster describing the power and fuel economy gains readily available by removing the choking emissions crap which reduce fuel economy, burn/waste more fuel, reduce performance and reliability, and increase cost of operation, I'm tempted to remove mine also when the warranty expires but if Austin Diesel's information reported above turns out to be accurate I'll have to forget that idea.

I don't know if you noticed but the CA-BAR was the leader in moving to ULSD and the new standards for our trucks... they are forcing all equipment with a diesel to RETRO-FIT or destroy it... . and this includes road machinery (read CAT off road)

I was in CA a month ago and the radio talk shows were talking about the new law to remove 3% of the vapors when cars and trucks are fueled... seems that the catch equipment will remove 92-94% and they (CA-BAR) have forced all stations to move to new equipment to catch an extra 3% that the current equipment misses... at a cost of 10K per pump (not station)... if you can't meet the deadline than you have to shut down until the pumps are updated... . of course the vapors in countries like India, China, Canada, and south America don't mean a thing... just what happens in CA.

In another note an article compared the 3% to be less than the far*'s from dairy cattle in CA that provide the milk they drink... an engineer did a study for the dairy farmers... as the methane gas is now a concern to the people (govt) of CA... . so I assume since they can't catch this methane gas, that the dairies will have to close and all those contented cows in the CA dairy commercials will be forced to leave the state...

OK... I'll get off the soap box... thanks for listening... .

Hey jelag, did ya catch the article where the animal feed is being re formulated to reduce methane emissions?

We livin' in strange days, folks...

It would not surprise me even a little to read later this year that the idiots who run the socialist state of CA have passed a new regulation requiring that all farm animals be retrofitted with methane gas traps at a cost of $1000/cow.

Every time I read or hear the latest CA outrage I pat myself on the back for having the wisdom to leave CA in 1988.

If that is true we all need to invest in whoever is making factory type exhaust systems, I'd say maybe 5% of the Dodge Diesels where I live (pre 6. 7's) are running factory type exhausts, the other 95% have at least the cat's removed. There will be lots of money to be made!!!!

Like HBarlow the freedom still available is one reason I moved to Texas. If this is true we may need to clean out the Alamo and get it ready for use again!!

IIRC you live in a rural area like I do. I doubt the regulations, if in effect, will be closely enforced in your area or mine unless the socialist party gains a majority in TX.

The TX DPS will have to hire, train, and deploy a lot more troopers statewide than they have now to make all the good old boys with trucks put their mufflers and CATs back on. We Texans are a stubborn and independent bunch.

great and i'm visiting, looking around at maybe settling down in texas.

i'm tired of all the bs on the left coast and trying to get away from all that crp.

tried to do my part to prevent the changes, but the wackos out number the normal people over there.

OR is a beautiful state but, sadly, it's part of the left coast where childlike liberals or evil socialists run the governments.

You're welcome to Texas. If you pass through the South Plains region around Lubbock stop by for a visit. PM me and I'll provide phone numbers. I have an RV pad if you're an RVer.

Time to Tune em Up, Turn em On and Smoke em up to the Hills... Funny but for the last half of the 20th century (Thanks and Safe Travels Wally C. ) the Soviets were the menace. Now we have governments that want to control everything you do and how you do. But of course that is WAYYYYY off Topic...
