I don't see why you guys think 210 is a problem especially when towing

I agree... ..... pulling my toyhauler I routinely stay above the 190 mark on my gauge. It will climb to what appears to be around 210 or maybe even higher and then the clutch fan kicks in..... when that kicks in, the water temp drops very fast back to 190. Which indicates to me that the cooling system is sized correctly. My opinion is that all trucks will raise their temps when pulling hard but the newer, more computer controlled rigs have nannies set in place that will keep the temp gauge in normal for a certain time period. After the pre-determined time period elapses, then the gauge will show movement to indicate a possible problem. My 2nd gen just reads whats there and sends its signal. As long as my coolant system is in great condition and my clutch fan engages, I let er' eat as Wingate put it.

These trucks are pretty resilient to being over-worked. My truck is modded but with the factory coolant system so I am always checking my gauges on hard pulls and have had no indication that 210 or even 220 hurts these Cummins diesels.

I dont exactly have an issue with the 210* degree part, most latter model engines from any brand, gas or diesel with be at or close to those temps. . Partly because of emission's , and to get a cleaner more powerful fuel burn. . The problem is the egts are partialy why they are getting to those temps and even higher, faster on the 04/05 model 5. 9's . . Not to mention all the fan cycleing that cuts into some power , and adds to a bit higher egt's also. . The pyro tells the story. . The amount of dropped valve seats i have personally witnessed on those late 04/05 common rails [unmodded] , leads me to believe that those higher egt's cummins originally told many 5 years ago arent a problem, really were. . Again i have not noticed this issue on 03' and early 04', nor on the 06' and newer 5. 9's . . I dont ever recall seeing valve seats being and issue on stock 03 and early 04's either . .

The 04. 5-07 all run the same EGT's, but the valves were changed in 06. 03/04 run much lower EGT's than 04. 5-07.

Personally I see higher coolant temps with lower EGT's on my Smarty Jr. Yes the head is the #1 source of heat to the coolant, but the 200° lower EGT's don't counteract the increased cylinder temps from advanced timing.

I've seen 215 degrees coolant temperature once with our 2011 - pulling our 16,000 lb GVWR 5th wheel up the side of a mountain to a mountaintop RV park at Hot Springs, Arkansas on a 95+ degree summer day. 215 is where the cooling fan kicked in hard, and coolant temps began dropping.

Transmission temp on the EVIC eventually reached 218 degrees on the same climb - 1st and 2nd gear with heavy throttle.

So I assume that to know the real engine temps there has to be a aftermarket temp gauge????????? How accurate is the stock gauge?? I know that my 04. 5 ran 1400degrees at the turbo. Cummins told me that this is normal. I have always towed HEAVY with my 04 and I have NEVER had any trouble with engine coolant temps. This is with 125,000 miles of towing on it. Many loads in the Nevada hot and dry, and the passes in Montana and Wyoming. I recently updated the turbo to help with EGTs, now is does now exceed 1250 on a hard dry pull. The emissions requirements have made the old 190 degree engine temps very obsolete.

Today I received a letter in my company mailbox indicating the 6. 7L FORD has to go in for a total of 3 updates/recalls... apparently my 4th NOX sensor is faulty as well, yet ANOTHER software update, and the turbine wheel on the turbocharger is apparently erroding away, so its suppose to be inspected/replaced. Who knows, maybe one day, they will finish designing this truck...

Yea i know how you feel . . Every generation dodge i had went through premature frontend wear. . That was a concern of mine when i decided to go with a 3rd gen dodge in 05'. . Low and behold with a little over a year and 40k miles on it the frontend didnt seem to sit as high. . Sure enough dodge sent out a recall on the frontend . . My 82' gmc [first year 6. 2 diesel] went 4 years and nearly 140k before it ever saw it's first repair, an injector pump. . Go figure. .

Got all my updates donw, now its got an oil leak... AGAIN!. Last time theyy replaced the turbo supply line... wonder what it will be this time... Just had to dump another gallon of oil in it, hoping to get back to Texas before something falls off... .

FWIW, if you have something leaking on one of these trucks, get it fixed!!. . When hot oil hits the afterburner exhaust system, its flames up REALLY quick!.
