Water in fuel..need advice

I took my 6. 7L in for a 6k service. I asked the shop to replace my fuel filter and let me see the contents of the filter to asertain if dirt or crud was in the filter. He came back to me and said the new type filter on the 6. 7L was not a screw off type but needed to be changed out by the DC dealer. It is a modular unit with 2 sending units, 2 ports and a plastic screw off rig on the bottom to drain water in the fuel. He loosened the plastic gizmo on the bottom, drained the contents and hand tightened. When he cranked the cumminz it spewed diesel fuel everywhere. He removed the plastic gizmo on the bottom the the very small rubber "O" ring had broke and did not seal. We called every dealer in 60 miles and NO one had just a seal. Shop visited a dealer 20 miles away and purchased an entire modular filter to get a new "O" ring. I would suggest to all you 6. 7L owners to get your dealer to order you a couple of these rings.

Guess what this modular fuel filter sells for?

What fluid we drained out of the drain tube was a little cloudy. Since the filter is not a spin on type you can't just pour it out in your hand.

IMO it seems changing the filter must be very important on this engine or the price would be alittle higher for the whole shabang.

The design sounds simular to the one that was on my 89 Ford 7. 3. The fuel filter was 3 part, the head, the filter, and the bottom that had the drain and water in fuel sensor. The filter was a spin on type with the bottom screwing into the filter. There was an o-ring on the bottom also. This unit was simular to the Racor design.

After doing research today and visiting my local dealer, parts lady printed out schematic of oil filter assembly. The filter is for sure a spin on type. Her price for assembly was $30. xx's. Just filter was less. The dealer out of town sold us 2 assembles for $30. xx's. Below is photo for Geno's filter.

Dealer did say that 9,100 were on national backorder.

Others have performed the fuel filter replacement from below; I only have 5,200 miles on my truck as of now, but I plan on a fuel filter change before 10k miles. I'd certainly try it from below before I'd pay $95 for labor on the fuel filter.

Guys,

I have changed the fuel filter a multiple of times and I have changed it from the bottom of the truck as well as from the top of the truck also.

Its tight, but it will go and if you move the filter easy enough, you want get dirt off the other parts of the truck into the filter as you position the filter in and around things to install it.

Really is a nice filter, for the 12 bucks I paid; but I think cummins could have made a better place to mount it that would be easy to R&R... Its a little tuff, but I would not pay 90 bucks for this to happen.

Just open the small drain valve and let a little fuel out as you break the seal, this will help keep the fuel from running down your arm if you service this from under the truck.

I haven't replaced mine yet, but am planning to... So the filter attaches via the 2 holes on the metal part? And the entire unit is only $18? Wow. That sounds almost too reasonable.

Where's the o-ring that you broke? Was it on the gray spin-on nipple?

He removed the plastic gizmo on the bottom the the very small rubber "O" ring had broke and did not seal. We called every dealer in 60 miles and NO one had just a seal.

Have you tried the hardware store? Usually an o ring of the same thickness, and of slighlty smaller diameter, if you can't find the right one, will work just fine (at least for a few months until replacement.

Every "O" ring we have found is too large in diameter. Too fat. We have a hydraulic shop in Charlotte , when I visit there I think they might have one.

The simplest and easiest and safest way is to take the wheel off, the liner out and change it that way. Way less chance of getting dirt into the system. I've done it six times now and it can be done in less than an hour.

pull drain hose off bottom, reach in from the top put a normal filter wrench around the body. it unscews very nicely, I have long arms and is no problem to change. especially compared to earlier versions.

Just changed the fuel filter for the first time today on the 6. 7L MegaCab (207 hrs and 8372 miles)... ... . all without removing the L/F tire and wheel and wheel well liner.

Took about 25 minutes or so, including gathering up the drain pan, oil filter wrench, and cleaning up the mess. I sure to do miss the easy fuel filter changes on the 5. 9L HPCR's..... they're a piece of cake.

I put an extra long drain hose on mine, then I drain the filter prior to removal. I can replace the filter with no mess and no need to remove the inner fender.
