GM Ceases Medium-Duty Truck Production

Just going to share this story with you. So I'm at my jobsite the other day when the pool delivery truck shows up. He's got a 2008 3500 set up with goosenecked trailer to hold anywhere from 10-40 foot fiberglass pool units. I began talking with the guy while we waited for the uloading and install crew. I asked him how he liked the new 6. 7l since he owned a 5. 9l before. He mentioned how he loved the power of it and attributed the new power in part to cummins v-8 design. I said "what are you talking about"? He insisted this was the new cummins v-8 and that the dealer sales guy told him so. After some back and forth he said I'll bet you $100. Luckily for him I'm not a betting guy and you and I know that wouldn't have been a fair bet anyway. So we raised the hood to settle the dispute and you know the rest is history. He was devasted. I then proceeded to share with him the benefits of TDR and suggested he join immediately since there is a lot of stuff he needs to learn. Especially the newer engine with all of the emission devices. Once again, beware of the dealer. Perhaps the Mazda dealership will be more knowledgeable. That's were customers are being pointed to when the local dodge dealer closes around here. Hope you found this story humorous as I did.

These kind of stories never surprise me. It is simply amazing how many people out there simply do not know the product they own, or are thinking of buying.

How could you buy a truck and not look under the hood? I know there is a lot more under there than there used to be, but it's still pretty obvious that that it's an I-6!

How could he use a truck for business and never check the fluids. It should be the first thing he does before he gets ready to roll.

Yeah I hear ya. The point also is you can't always trust what the dealer tells ya. However, until I pointed out 6 injectors in a row this guy had a hard time believing still!

When I was looking for my 2003 4. 7L (don't get me started, it was a race engine, not a mule) I wanted a handshaker, asked the "salesman" how much to get a 6 speed with the 4. 7L, he rolled his head and said, um about a $100.

Don't look it up, they only came with the 5 speed.

A lot of owners could look under the hood and still not know whether they owned a V8 or inline 6. Fortunately, most of them buy Furds.

And I'm okay with the unsuspecting/uneducated not mechanically inclined etc... owner. It's when they try to learn from a "reputable source" such as a dealer salesman and is mislead. This really bothers me. Generally speaking though most people assume big trucks = v8 power including big rigs and heavy equipment. Most are shocked to learn differently. I just get really upset when the source of information doesn't know his/her information. A friend of mine just purchased an 09 2500 series and I was dissappointed by the lack of and correct information to properly maintain his new truck. I let him sign on with my sig and he joined the next day after spending only 1 hour on the TDR.

I have hear so much bs out of dealers mouth it realy is sad. from the the concept that because you have 4wheel drive power will always go to all 4 wheels and because of that you don't need a limited slip in the rear of a a high power pickup. to a jeep dealer telling people that the jeep 4. 0 is a v6(that one kills me) so i go and mess with sales men when i have to , its a fun hobby

Kevin,

I hope you made him get on his knees and thank the Lord for it NOT being a V-8! We know what is best!!!

Mickey

I wish I could have. You should have seen the dejected look on his face when he found out it was an I-6. I don't know if it's because he found out it was an I-6 or that the salesman mislead him. Either way I told him about the TDR and how he should sign up ASAP!

Does sound like a fun hobby. If you're looking to buy though be sure to play dumb and keep that info as your ace when it comes time to deal.

Not to keep dragging this thread on but... I digress. My dad has been diesel everything since a kid. The family has owned a gravel/mining business and had many large heavy equipment. Most of these were I-6 just like most class 8 on highway trucks. He knows the value of an I-6. For the life of me though, I don't understand why my dad wants the Ford so bad. Come to find out after owning my truck and talking dodge vs ford for years the conversation never came down to the engine platform. A couple months ago I revealed to him that the powerstroke is a v-8. Again, he was devasted but instantly gained a value for dodge and its I-6. Knowing him though he'll purchase a F350 and convert it or better yet buy a F650 with a CAT.

My best story on this was when I went for emissions, and when I got the report from the kid, it said on it under number of cylinders; "8".

I said, "Dude, it's a six. "

He said in a condsending voice, "No sir, it's an eight!"

"Ok, I am the Idiot that drives and fixes this thing, maybe they ripped me off? Lets go look for those missing cylinders!" So, I pop the hood and count from the back of the exhaust side, "1 2 3 4 5 6. Where are the other two? Maybe they fell off?" (That happened on a buddies Powerstroke, turned it self into a V-6 the hard way. )

Kid, "Our tow truck is a V-8!"

Me, "Your truck is a Ford, This is a Dodge!"

New Ford/Powerstroke = $100

New Dodge/Cummins = $45,000

Kid's face... ... ... ... ... ... = PRICELESS:-laf

I have an old "friend" who has sold Chevy trucks for 20 years or more and has told me that he drove big trucks for awhile when he was younger.

We were talking one day when he was working a couple years ago and he tried to get me interested in one of his Chevy trucks. He knows, of course, that I drive Dodge-Cummins trucks. I told him to let me know when all Class 8 OTR trucks shift over to V8 diesels and I'd consider a GM. He first tried to argue that all Class 8 trucks are V8 engines because some of them have twin exhaust stacks. He was rather embarassed when I advised him to look underneath the sleeper for the "Y" connector that splits the single exhaust into two.

He's a good guy but a typical car/truck salesman. He sells trucks because he's always been too lazy to work.
