6-sp in a `96?

Could someone shed some light on putting a `01 6-sp in a `96,Ex:what would be the advantage( other than getting rid of the 5th gear problem,what actually would have to be changed to do the swap? I have a chance to get one of these trans. reallycheap (less than $1ooo. oo) do I need the flywheel to go along with it and a new clutch and Pressure Plate? lastly does the 6-sp have the extra gear on the low side or on the O D side/thanx

I think that it was two issues ago(TDR) anyway, past issues i think that it was John Holms, not sure, for resurch, done this conversion, though a dodge dealer he uses in Reno, it cost a lot of money, almost 8 grand? but of course every thing was new. the trans was 4500 alone. He said it was a good swoop, but questioned the cost, was it worth it? that would be up to you.

if you have a good trans, one that will fit, you have a good deal for that price. do resurch on past issues. he gave full proceedure. and parts.

Early 6 speeds had the same clutch spline as the 5 speeds, 1. 25" x10. Later ones used 1. 375" x 10 so need a different disk.



The extra gear of the 6 speed is in the middle. First and overdrive are about the same as the 5 speed. Most of us found that adding power to broaden the power band, and maybe the governor spring kit to allow more rpm before shifting, was enough to make the 5 speed adequate. Definitely call 800-std-tran and get the 5th gear/mainshaft kit for the 5 speed. A local guy here will change your clutch and install the kit for $400.



For the 6 speed installation, you need the 98 up crossmember, different length driveshafts. I believe it was Scott Dalgleish who reported in TDR the swap. If I recall, Glenn Thomas Dodge did the swap using all new stuff from parts dept. On a more "down to earth" pricing mode, Jim Leonard did it on his truck, check his ad in the back of TDR, or call him at 530-938-3427.



The 6 speed weighs about 360 lb, the 5 speed about 200. There have been problems with it, and no aftermarket parts are available for it. Fixing it could get expensive and time consuming. Parts are readily available for the 5 speed through Std Trans in Texas.

If you can get a working 6 speed NV5600 for under a grand do it!!! If you do not put it in your truck you can sell it and make a little money while helping another member out getting him the transmission for a super price.

Would that 'local guy' happen to be a really nice fellow who holds a PhD in chemistry?

The local guy is a heavy line mechanic, and instructor, who has access to a really HD lift (used for dump trucks, etc). He has done a lot of NV4500s to date.
