I was wondering how quick you could get a 6 speed cummins with the 600 to go in the 1/4 mile but also be streetable and not get excessively hot while towing heavy. Yah i know kinda asking a lot lol but instead of getting the 06 auto i maybe getting a 05 cummins with the 6 speed. Thanks in advance.

Your problem will be getting out of 2nd and 3rd. I think most guys that drag with a 6 speed are starting in 3rd, at least I seem to remember hearing that. Once your in to 4th, 5th, and 6th you will be able to rip right along, but with that said, it is a truck transmission and is not designed for speed shifting.

If you want to make the throws faster by reducing the distance of throw then you will need a short-shift kit and then you can still miss a shift.

Your advantage for the street will be that you can tow heavier and use an exhaust brake ;) and have alot more control on the down hill runs with a trailer.

Good luck :)

in my expirience, you can't shift that fast. if you try then it will always grind a little bit, especially if you start in first, which makes you start really slow.

Wanna bet?Ask anyone that was at the High Desert diesel round up how fast it can be done!I start in 3rd most of the time with the street tires. With the slicks I will most likely use 2nd. Without getting any traction I ran a best of 14. 41@103. I drive this truck everyday to and from work, and also haul a bunch of different trailers all the time. No issues with EGT's. The last 2 tanks I have gotten 16. 5mpg out of it and that is not driving with an egg under the go peddle. That is in town milage.

I agree with cat. You gotta be good with a 6spd. I use to have a dakota and a mustang. I got so i could shift better with the dakota than with the mustang. Im sure low 14's isnt far out of reach.

ok i c well i guess i should rephase me question haha i just wanna beat my dad once or at least give him a good run for the money. He has an 04 powerstroke with a banks sixgun water/meth and propane. Also has theats torqueshift. Can i at least contend with him? thanks

As was stated above -- I just don't think you can get off the line and through gears 2 thru 4 fast enough to keep up. It's just not geared right for fast acceleration. You'd almost have better luck with a 48RE.

Racing from a dead stop against an automatic is pretty darn tough with a 6 speed. The guys that do it successfully have loads of torque to start out in 3rd. But that has got to be hard on the mechanics. The few knock downs that I have had against an automatic, have shown that I can keep up and start to pull on em, but when I have to shift, I lose ground. Power is not the problem, it is the rpm limit that does me in. I run out of rpm really quick. Once I am in 5th and 6th, I will walk away from them every time. just getting through the gears without grinding or banging them is the biggest challenge. ;)

Hook up a 10K trailer to each one and race him up the hills. Drag racing a towing truck is dumb (no offence intended) IMO.

jwilliams,Mine was the red 05 with the bent bed. I have a single turbo and if the slicks would have fit I would have been it the 12's. My best mph Sat. was 105 but no traction. I had almost all 2. 95 or up 60' times.

Klenger,When we were at one of the PSCA races with my kids car I ran the ol 96 a few passes and one ol boy came up to me and said;Ya ought not race with the tow rig it makes a might costly tow bill! :-laf
