The getrag is replacing the NV 5600 after the first of the year. Just a warning to you guys that want the NV 5600, order it while you can. I called my dealership to change the paint scheme a little on my truck I ordered, and they said it was too late. They said that because the switch is coming it was too late. They said Dodge is really cranking out the 6 speeds right now to clear out the remainder of their NV 5600's. Good news is that my truck will be built and at the dealership within a month :)

so whats the skinnny on the getrag? the NV5600 is an animal, to be sure, and chances are this change is for cost reasons. But really, have we determined that the getrag is not as strong as the NV5600?

If it is as crappy as every other Getrag unit out there, THERE WILL BE PROBLEMS. It is known in our industry that Getrag transmissions are absolute peices of crap! Replacement parts will not be made availble until the warranty period is over, so if you have gone past your warranty and toast your trans, you will be buying a reman unit from Dodge, there will be no other option. Getrag does not release parts for their units until they have to. The NV5600 had its share of problems with destroying bearings, synchros and gears, but otherwise was a bulletproof unit. Most of the problems were addressed when the input shaft changed to a 1 1/4" from 1 1/8. During this change the sycnros, sliders and gears were also changed to the updated form, since the change the units have had a much lower failure rate. When Getrag releases parts, the pricing will be astronomical, as it is with BMW, Toyota, and others. Hopefully the aftermarket will get a jump on these units and have all of the pieces made overseas. Dodge has made a HUGE Mistake by going with Getrag again, you would think that they would have learned lesson with the G360 in the 1st gens. I price comparison that shows the Getrag price issue is clearly evident, especially when you take into account that the G360 is 15 yrs old and stills sells for more than $350. 00 more than an NV4500 reman unit. Our pricing is $1375 for a G360 vs. $1050 for a NV4500. The G360 is known for blowing cluster gears thru the cast iron case and destroying the entire unit. Nearly all of the other Getrag units on the market due the same. Just some food for thought. You might want to check that Automatic box on the order form instead of the manual!

Only time will tell how the new transmission will hold up, but I sure am glad I bought two new trucks in the last 10mo's with NV-5600's. I wasn't planning on buying any more for a couple of years, but if I was still in the market I'd make sure my new truck had the NV-5600 as it has proven to be an incredibly strong transmission. The new Getrag is unknown and previous models have been less than stellar. Here's hoping.
