What is the difference? I have found 3 trucks, 2 with the $400 HD option, and one with the standard 6 speed. What are the diferences? Thanks Todd

HD $400. option is for NV5600 and standard no extra is for G56. I test drove a new G56 equipped truck and was very impressed, but it only had ten miles on it and the front input shaft seal was leaking like a sive and made the clutch slip real bad, otherwise I believe this very well be a better trans than our beloved 5600. This is the best shifting truck trans i've ever driven, the only thing I don't like the looks of is the one piece trans housing that bolts up to the adapter on the motor, probably no hope for squeezing a DD or for that matter even a good clutch of any kind in.

Guys,,,

Can someone straighten me out

We are looking at special ordering an 05 quad cab 4 x4 3500... . with a manual

I keep reading that the hd 6 speed is now not available (although dodge still is listing it as available in their online build catalog)

so... . what will I get... . ????

then I read the transmissions are leaking???? what gives

Can someone educate me as to what i should be looking for...

I also saw the jacobs exhaust brake is no longer available from the factory..... is dodge coming back with one?

Im not interested in the maga cab but should I wait for the 06s and an american build?

confused

- You can't get the NV-5600 anymore. The HD is the G56 and the "non-HD" is the lighter duty gasser transmission. All CTD's get the HD G56 and as far as I know there is only one transmission available. The one without the extra $400. 00 may have been an NV-5600 (old stock). Check the build dates and look to see if the transmission is cast iron (NV-5600).

- The G-56 is on hold right now (see other thread) for what appears to be an issue with the new Dual Mass Flywheel.

If it were me, I'd be happy to find an early build truck with an NV-5600 and no dual mass flywheel on a lot.

I am pretty sure the no charge 6 speed is for the gasser and the $400 option is for the G56 with the Cummins. The NV-5600 was a $400 option when it was available also. If you spec a truck with a gas engine (Hemi) and then upgrade it to a CTD, you have to pay whatever for the CTD + $400 for the 6 speed, or even more $$$ for the 48RE. The Dodge website is constantly full of errors and shows options that cannot be used together or removes options that are actually available. It's really sad that they can't link the website to the same ordering system that the dealers use (less the invoice pricing).

After looking at over 90 truck in my area that is what i noticed, the 5600 used to be a $400 option anyway you speced it the only two G56 I could find had a completely different layout on the window sticker and the G56 is on there as a no charge option.

TRUEBLUE

List the last eight of the vin so I can run the equipment list. That will tell for sure.

Found a 05 sport with a HD 5600 and I will be signing papers thursday!I spent countless hours searching dealer inventories to find one with a 6speed. Now I can hardly wait to pick it up! Todd

we were gonna order a truck next week, but no 5600 :{ . I may just keep the 01 and rack up the miles on it. we just got quoted a smokin price on a new truck but the only catch was we had to order it. So if i understand you guys right this new transmission would be in a truck if we ordered it. I just got done installing a b&w gooseneck hitch on one and noticed reverse was in the wrong place, and then i got under it right away to find that aluminum trans :( . next thing I did was come here to find answers thanks in advance

stude: Yes all new orders are equipped with the G-56.

Do as I did, and alot of others and grab one of the few remaining NV-5600's of the lot.

I think that's good advice I work for a trailer company and our trucks work for a living. We've pull loads that are way over the design for the pick ups. The nv 5600 is the first transmission that has never given up on us. The last time we had a 4500 go out in our 97 we swapped in a 5600 and have been really happy over the last 120k. This truck now has over 300k and the only thing I don't like about it are the brakes. I've been leary of the AAM axles and now they take away my favorite transmission, fuel pump in the tank what else can go wrong. I wasn't happy about the 17" tire because we could buy 16" tires cheap. Are the brakes that much better? hope so. DOT has started looking very hard at pick ups used for commercial work. If I got to mess with DOT I may just as well buy a semi. I hope for good reports on the new transmission. I don't want to be on the side of the road, wondering why I didn't just take the old 97 for another run.

Brakes MUCH better. No comparison. If I'm not mistaken the Fords and Chevys also going to 17 inch tires. I bet the 16's will be a dinosaur before long. Nothing wrong with AAM axels. Been around a long time. Now the lift pump and G56 trans no one knows how they'll hold up.

At least the aluminum casing will not rust... .

My NV5600 looks like it is 15 year old... BUT I will not be trading it in anytime soon! 60K down and 300K miles to go.

Trueblue,

I've looked at hundreds of window stickers, and I couldn't find a rhyme or reason to them. It could be the plant they come out of?? Anyhow, some stickers show the 5600 6-speed as standard equipment, and hence it looks like it's a no charge. Make no bones about it, the 5600 costs $400 extra. When I ordered my '04. 5, I could have gotten the five speed for no charge (no thanks).

The 5 speed was not available in 2004. 5 or later (CTD 600/610) turcks. I think it is a no charge option with the Hemi.

The standard NV5600 is the same as the gasser, the HD5600 has a little bit different gear ratios. This is what my dealer found when I had him research it. After hours of inventory searching,I now have a 05 3500 with a NV5600HD and love it! :D Todd

Is this new transmission made by mercedes or what? it just doesn't make sense to me. you know the 4500 ate chryslers lunch on warranty, so the 5600 has got to have proven itself, and save them warranty money. If it is a mecedes might be ok and it might make sense since this would be a in house item. ok here my idea. the g56 is so new it would be worth a fortune if you pulled it out and sold it right away. So that would give us enough money to put in a heavy truck transmission. I have heard of guys putting in 7 speeds ( wish i could have a 13 speed ). The size of the trannies wouldn't work. Is there any threads on tdr to truck trannys in dodge trucks?

stude:

Not sure where you heard the NV4500 cost D/C a bunch of warranty money? The 5th gear nut was a problem for sure, but most came apart at or around 100M so the only cost would have been folks with the 100K extended warranty. I have 157K on mine with some HEAVY pulling (30,000+ lbs. gross weight) I really couldn't be happier with my little overacheaver 4500. If it ever breaks down, I'll have it rebuilt and throw it back in there again! Take it easy. Jeff
