6 speed or auto??

I am about to purchase an '03 or new '04. I had an auto in my old '95 that never gave me a day with out some sort of problem. Most of the problems were while towing. Is the new gen. autos worth a flip? I am really leaning toward the 6 speed but it does get really old in the city?

Any other advice would be appreciated also

If your going to tow get a 6 speed. I wish i had gotten a 6 speed now. I dont think i like my 48re in the city. . seems very confused.

I had a auto in my 95 as well, after going through 4 of them (one of them a performance one for around 4000 bucks) I swapped in a 6 speed. I'll never go back now. I ordered a new 04. 5 with the 6'er, never thought twice. Of course I tow heavy, and have a PacBrake, so the new auto may be all you'll need if you are only towing lightly or not at all

I likes 'em both...

I like 'em both. My 02 is a 6spd and my wife's 03 is 48RE, both are great.



A couple of things about the 48RE: It seems sensitive to the go pedal as to how it shifts, although it was a little firm on the shift. We just had transmission fluid flush/adj at dealer and this thing is real sweet now.



I love driving both trucks: If you're gonna tow real heavy, go 6spd, if not go auto or better yet get you a 6spd and the missus an auto

Love my 6 speed. A short shift kit might make it more tolerable in the city but I haven't done that yet so I couldn't tell yah. I did put on a T handle Hurst Shift knob since my dog ate my old one. I like it except it's real cold for the first 20 minutes of driving when it's freezing out.

Another difference

I drove a 2004. 0 HO with 48RE and 6 Spd. There is just more punch with the stick vs auto, at least as judged by my seat-of-the-pants-o-mometer. The same was true when I bought my old truck. Yes, there are times I get tired of shifting in downtown type traffic. But driving the truck empty and just pushing on the go pedal produced more go. JMHO. Reliability is another issue. The 6spd is a well proven box. The 48RE is still new enough to have some questions about it in my mind. THe cost difference new is about $600, which will buy other goodies

I traded by 5 sp. for the new 48. I love the auto, especially when it's time to smoke another brand from the light! Sticks are a pain until you hit the open road, then it doesn't really matter unless you want a clean floor area. Good luck, Doc

The sixxer man!!! The NV5600 is a hefty piece but the clutch is really light and that makes for one unbeatable combo for me! Shifting gears could only be better if you were driving something like a Subaru WRX-STi------and I don't have one of those. Really though, mine shifts so much better since switching the transmission to Amsoil 5W-30. Almost all the notchiness is gone now but it wasn't really a problem before. I've driven a Duramax/Allison before buying my truck. It was very nice and smooth and about as interesting as watching chrome rust. It just wasn't for me.

I'm a six speed man. Why? The control over the engine RPM is better with six choices, exhaust brake compatible, stronger, and more efficient. Definitely the better choice when trailering.



The only time I miss an auto is when I am talking on the cell phone while eating a burger, taking notes, and looking up addresses on my Palm. I don't have a free knee to shift

I had a '98 w/exhaust brake and automatic, and pulled a 5th wheel with a weight at the top of the allowable range. It ran and pulled great for 6 years.



I now have a 2004. 5 w/ automatic and it does great, too.
