Bought a new '97 4x4 2500 with the auto and a 3:55. After 20K I traded it in for a new 2000 3500 4x4 with a 6 speed and a 3:55. Never looked back. If you want to pull, get a 6 speed.

Got to love the 6-pack!!!

I pull a reasonable load and it's amazing how easy it is. Once you have your speed up and are in 6th gear it takes quite a hill to require additional shifting because there always seems to be plenty of power.

I own a 6 speed, and would not trade. That said - I never expect to beat anyone with an automatic from light to light, I agree the auto is better in some off road situations, and I'm annoyed by the fact that my 3rd gear still has a very mild clash on about 50% of the shifts unless I double-clutch, and I absolutely can't stand letting others drive my baby, knowing how few are competent with a stick these days.
So, I guess I agree with the comment - you can't go totally wrong either way! Scratch your head (or other body part), think about it, and then once you make your decision never look back!

I enjoy my 6 speed, had an automatic before that and enjoyed that, too. One thing that swayed me was being able to throw an exhaust brake on when new with no warranty problems. I wouln't go back now that I've had it.

Another advantage of the stick over the auto is that you get a Dana 80 rearend instead of the Dana 70. More horsepower, more torque, bigger rear axle, for less money. #ad
