Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) tdramrmbr's Fifth gear fix?

Just bought a '01 2500 6 spd from a dealer, when I drove away I noticed a rattling noise coming from the transmission in neutral. Showed the service manager the problem and he said "Hmm that doesn't sound right" and he told me to bring the truck in a week later. Curiously I checked the oil level in the transmission and it was empty. I had noticed an oil leak on the back of the transmission but figured to have it looked at when the truck was in the shop, so I added that special Mopar oil and after a short drive noticed a puddle under the truck. Hopefully  I will be getting a new transmission when I bring it in tomorrow. Is this a common problem with the 6 spd?

Welcome the the TDR and congrats on the truck. Hope they can get it resolved for you. By the way, the NV5600 6 speed transmission is about $3000, so don't expect the dealer to jump on getting you a new one. Is it in warranty?

Thank you, have always wanted to be a member but never had the truck. The dealer gives a 30 day warranty on used vehicles so it should be covered. I also purchased a power train warranty on the truck. I hope for a new transmission b/c the transmission ran for 400 miles w/o oil in it I would imagine there is not a part in it that would not have been affected by the lack of oil.

6 spd noisy

It is common for a 6 spd to be a little noisy idling in neutral. Some make noise and some dont. Does the trans make noise when in gear? How much gear oil did you add to fill the trans? If you added less than a quart or so you probably will be alright. I think a few of the other 6 spd owners will chime in and agree with the noise in neutral. I hate to say it, but they will probably just fix your leak, refill it and give it back to you unless the noise is really bad, DC might cough up a transmission. Good Luck.

When I checked the transmission there was nothing in it. I added 3 quarts to fill it and then 2 more 2 days later, and that was not full but close enough. The noise I hear is a lot noisier then the engine and makes the noise in neutral and sometimes I hear it in 3rd while accelerating but not as bad as when in neutral. The dealer said that they checked ALL the fluids, with that leak it would have only taken 2 or at most 3 days to leak out. I had put at least 400 miles on it before I decided to check the oil on it. I just assumed that the dealer checked it and that it was full.

Sorry man, I missunderstood you about it being empty. With the fluid level being that low, I would say that something was most likely damaged. Its probably scored the gears and it will never be quiet again. Maybe a bearing noise but I doubt it. Hope they give you a new transmission. :)

wow, if it's louder than the engine i would guess you've got some problems. If it was that low, i would really push for a new one. Sounds to me like that transmission will be hurting from now on.

My 02 was in twice for transmission leaks. It first leaked in the front then the rear the second time. My transmission is quiet in neutral and all gears. Jeff

my 5600 is quiet, and has no leaks.

But, I only have 7800 miles on my truck. I will watch for this leaking... .

I have 36k on mine and all is quiet. Changed the oil in it for the first time (for me anyways). The goo on the PTO covers was gray and looked original.

Nasty looking and the magnet did its job. No big flakes, just dust. No difference in shifting. Love my 6spd.

I used Redline MTL (see my thread on that in the Products forum)

It's great stuff and available from a couple online retailers, including Summit racing. I buy from Al Smith Automotive Products...

Dealer called and said that the rear seal "Blew out" and that is why I lost all the oil. Took a whole day for them to figure out what I told the to begin with. The good news is that they said it is not worth rebuilding the transmission and they are going to replace it with a new one. It is covered under warranty. They said it would take about a week to get the new transmission and that they can put it in the same day. Now I have to drive this little rental car for a week. :{ :{ :{ I miss hearing the rattle of my truck.
