noise in neutral

I got a copy of TSB #06-001-03 today. subject is rattle sound

from transmission when idling. this bulletin involves replacing

the clutch disc with a revised part. this bulletin applies to vehicles

equipped with a 5. 9L Cummins high output turbo diesel (sales

codeETH) and NV5600 6 speed manual trans. (sales code DEE)

built on or before May 11, 2003 (MDH 0511xx).

so I dont think it matters how many miles you have on your

truck. they will put in a new clutch disc. so It's official we finally

got a TSB. I've been waiting for this a long time. it sure had me

fooled though. I thought sure it was the transmission making the

noise. I'm glad I was wrong. HBowers

Does this TSB only apply to the 03's? What changed to make this show up only in the 03 ETH/DEE and not be a factor in the 02 ETH/DEE's?

I think the 03 are using a different clutch but I could be wrong. From what I have been told they upgraded the disk in the clutch to eliminate the rattle. Disk for mine should be in today and then I will take it to them to be replaced.

The clutch was changed or revised for 03 according to peter at SBC. He did tell me what the change was but I dont recall, it was done to increase holding power for the 03. I wish he would chime in here because he new exactly what was causing the rattle and what the fix is.

Thanks, that makes sense because it was marginal for 505 ft lbs of torque it would of been real marginal for the 03's higher torque numbers. So what ever they did to upgrade it they did not do correctly so this is a redo. Hope they take care of everyone with this problem.

The clutches are primarily the same in the 03 as in the 01 and 02. The only difference is the pressure plate has a little more holding power for the increase in HP. The noise is coming from the clutch disc. The springs are a little loose and the noise that you are hearing are the springs rattling in the carrier. Because the 03 is soooo quiet you can now here it. That is why the noise goes away when you push in the clutch, because the clutch disc is released and stops turning. The fix is to tighten the springs so they can not move. There is no damage occurring with this noise.

thanks Peter, I'm tempted to just buy a clutch disc from you

and install it myself. but I'll probably let the dealer attempt

it first. beings it's under warranty.

If the dealers give you a hard time and the noise is to bothersome for you, you can send me your OEM disc and I will tighten the springs for you at no charge. Your only cost will be the shipping and effort in taking it out.

called DC they confirmed TSB and my truck falls under this tsb but now my 6spd will not make the noise anymore ... . that figures. sometimes it rattles somettimes it does not but one thing is for sure it will be replaced before i hit 12,000 miles:p

Mine too...

ALWAYS made the noise until I got DC to tell me to take it in, now it's gone and won't make it at all. just rolled over 23,000 miles, dang I really hate that it stopped now:(

I think if you pull a load and put a lot of torque on the clutch

disc it will probably rattle aand knock in neutral w/clutch out.

I started pulling my 5th wheel rv from the very start. I think

that's why mine has been rattling almost from the start.

probably if you don't pull anything, chances are you won't

have the problem. that's just my opinion. I think mine has

gotten worse. it vibrates and sets up a humming noise at around

2000 rpm in every gear. I'm hoping the new clutch disc will fix

that also. I have an appointment TUE. the 17th to have the new

revised disc installed. so I hope I hope.

He also told me they had another reflash out for engine performance.

I was wondering about this. Is it going to be a recall like the last one? If not, do they charge for this kind of thing?

I've towed a lot lately and confirmed that my mileage has dropped since I had the CO2 recall done. Unladen mileage is about the same.

Mine is at the dealer(La Grange Dodge)getting the clutch disk replaced today. Well I actually took it there yeaterday afternoon so we will see what happens. My mpg dropped slightly too when they did the CO2 reflash but since I starting using Stanadyne Performance Formula the last two tanks were 20. + before they did the CO2 refash I would occasionally hit 20+ but after the refash it was in the 19+ and sometime 18+. And since the reflash my overhead has been reading lower mpg used to be on the high side:confused:
