Many of us w/ the 6 speed transmission experienced gear noise. I'm interested in knowing what's the percentage. Thanks for your participation! Dan

The only noise I've had so far is when the loose nut behind the wheel is under caffinated and misses a shift:D

very faint at this time. neutral w/ clutch out. a friend has same noise in his 03 but with a much greater volume. got noisier as miles increased

Mine also appears to be getting noisier as the miles add up, do believe it is a bearing problem of some type. :( Find out Monday when it goes to dealer!!

6 speed noise

Mine still makes noise when I first let the clutch out, but the noise subsides much quicker now with 5500 miles on it. I have owned two 6 speeds prior to my 03. One was a 99, the other an 01. They both exhibited the same noise we are hearing in our 03s, it was just harder to detect with the louder engines. My experience with all three trucks has been that the 6 speed gets better with more miles, but the noise never totally goes away. I think it's just the nature of the beast. IMHO.

Haven't noticed any noise but it sure doesn't shift smooth - especially shifting into 3rd. Feels like there's no synchro. Also had to have the front seal replaced and the case resealed. But I still love it.

this transmission sounds just like and eighteen wheelers transmission. next time your are next to one and he is idling in neutral listen and you will hear the cackle of the transmission it is the same sound i hear in mine. remember this is huge transmission with lots of rotating mass behind a rough idling motor. rev you motor in neutral and watch the sound disaper. there is nothing wrong with these trannys just massive thats all. i think everyone is getting all excited about nothing. IMO

YUP - what pit bull sez!

Since you don't have the pleasant sounds of a REAL Cummins to listen to, and mask some of those annoying sounds, you MIGHT simply hafta turn up yer stereo and crank the windows down...

Now, for MY part, I prefer to hear the heartbeat of my sweet sounding Cummins... :p ;) :D

Just kiddin' ya fellas - be thankful you can HEAR evidence that truck is running - some of the Ford and GM guys sitting helpless alongside the road would pay good money to hear ANYTHING coming from their trucks...

Meanwhile, all they CAN hear, is the distant sound of an approaching tow truck...

Mine is noisy but I can kill the noise by pushing up against any of the synchrose. Anyone have the same sound when lugging the engine while driving or when shutting down with the clutch out.

Mine makes some noise at times. When it does make the noise, I can push the clutch in, move the shift lever around through the gears, then let the clutch out in neutral, and the sound goes away. The dealer said this is "normal" for these transmissions, and they claim it is from the gears rotating inside when in neutral.

As far as shifting goes, I couldn't't ask for a smoother shifting manual transmission. Everyone that drives my truck comments on how nicely it shifts... ... ... ... ... even my wife! It does have the XXXXXX 5W-30 synthetic engine oil in it however.
