If you could get a six speed to replace a five speed, which year would be the best? I think I can get one for a good price. (free:D )

any info would be great.

I would think that the newer the better. There is a different counter shaft assy. part # for some 5600's that have a warranty problem and the first ones in the Ram trucks had a smaller input shaft ( 1-1/4" v/s 1-3/8" ). I have a 2002 six speed and it shifts great and I am VERY happy with it. Some others have had problems though so you may get some better responses on the subject. HTH, Thomas

Thank for the info. They found one with 24k on it but I have no other info. and they had retail on the sheet at $2,600. The guy that has the connection, I help him fix his stock car when he smashes it. My welder comes in handy. So he thinks his connection will probably give it to him for free. That means I get a free six speed. :D :D :D :D Thanks again.

Hey buddy, how about hookin' me up with one of those pigs too?:D That is the steal of the century if you can pull that one off!:--)

don't be scared of a 99

I have a 99 6 speed and have no problems with it in 82k and pulling _hit with it most times over 22k no odd noises or anything else to make me worry about it.

Somebody asked about converting from a 5spd to a 6spd in the last month or so - I think it was illflem. Several good replies.

Mine was something like this:

I have an '00 that had the counter shaft replaced at ~35K miles and then the complete trans was replaced shortly thereafter. I love the gear splits but hate the shifting. IMO it's a clutch/pilot bearing/hydraulics issue but try getting that thru DC's collective skulls. If I had it to due over again I'd probably get a 5spd if the truck is a daily driver. My '96 was a 5spd and shifted great. My dad now drives the truck and has gone with a complete Banks set-up instead of a GV at Chuck Arnold's suggestion (The Power Shop). Dad hasn't complained about the gear splits while towing their 36ft 13K 5th wheel since the power upgrade.

I'd add a GV or USG to the 5 spd before spending the money to convert to a 6 spd.

Sounds like a good idea to me!

Does GV make an underdrive? I saw on their site that they make a 22% overdrive.

I could see the use of a 22% overdrive with a NVG4500 and 4. 10 gears.

If I had a NVG4500 with 3. 55 gears... I would rather have a 22% underdrive since 3. 55 gears are fast enough, and (at least on my truck) the torque peak is at 2000 RPM... which is right at 70 MPH with the NVG5600

just checked US Gear they offer a 1. 25:1 underdrive and a . 8:1 overdrive.

just something to think about.
