Does everyones 600 smoke like a Detroit diesel when started in the morning. It clears up right away, but runs real rough. I have had it start like it was flooded after shutting down hot. One or two times it has dropped a cylinder, then picked it back up after speeding up the engine. I'm curious how it will start in cold weather.

Hey Jim,

Haven't had any smoke at all on startup or problems starting. I will say it takes longer on the starter than my '01 before it fires off, but when it does, it doesn't smoke at all. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

BigDsl,

Your common rail engine takes longer to start because of the time required to pressurize the rail.

With the old ISB's, there was no pressurization required.

Check your engine serial number and date of manufacture on valve cover. If engine# is between 57130265 to 57149668 and built between 12-10-03 to 2-2-04 it needs the Cummins ECM reflashed. Symptoms are white smoke at 2500-3000 rpm at no load,miss/stumble/flat spot at 1500-2500 rpm at moderate acceleration can be with or without white smoke, and also white smoke on starting at below 30 degrees and white smoke on restarting vehicle not at operating temperature below 30 degrees air temperature. Reflash will fix problem and also give torque convertor lock up in manual 2nd gear

I get a hesitation during acceleration around 2200 RPM, depending on what gear I am in. On hard accel. it is accompanied with black smoke. My build date is 3/4/04 though. Maybe I am feeling something else during acceleration that is considered normal. I dont want to mess with it because I average 19 MPG and on the Hwy it is more like 21.

My truck also periodically runs rough/misses, and belches out white smoke at start up. I have had the truck to the dealership twice, but they haven't been able to duplicate the problem or fix it. If enough of us are having this problem I am sure they will have a TSB to fix it soon.

No smoke, no misses, no nothing. :) I do have a little soot on my bumper by the tailpipe - but excessive smoke on startup? No.

I have NOT had the TSB, and I have a January build date. I took delivery of my truck on 3/31, after the cold weather was over.

I figure I'll wait until this winter; if I have any of those symptoms, maybe I'll have it flashed, although, who knows, there may be a newer version by then.

I checked my valve cover, and my engine build date is 01-10-04,and the serial # is between the numbers you listed. I drove the truck after reading your post, and I don't have 2nd gear lock up. Do you know if there is a TSB for this problem.

Thanks for the info:

my truck will occasionally (on cold damp mornings) produce a light white smoke, lasts about 10-15 seconds - supposed to have had the reflash - but there is no sticker under the hood that i can find to confirm it
