I pulled a 16' gooseneck with a John Deere 5205, front end loader and shredder this morning. A total weight of about 8000 lbs. On flat ground, the fastest the truck will go is 75 MPH. :--) There are no mods on this truck, other that the muffler fell off. It seems like it takes a long time to accelerate, and the pedal is almost to the floor to keep the load moving at 70, ON FLAT GROUND . I can't figure this one out. The truck has pulled before, and always has felt a little sluggish. I never really noticed it until this morning when I was late for work and the rig wouldn't go. Just looking for any info.

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome, I've enjoyed reading through forums and learning more about my Cummins.

The fuel filter was replaced 250 miles ago and the air filter about 500 miles ago. I will look for boost leaks.

check the turbo

Pull the boot off the intake side of the turbo and see if it turns easily. There has been one report on here of a bad turbo on an earlier 600.

I pull a 18-20K trailer with my 04 with 4. 10 axle... . and have no trouble holding 70 where the law allows..... I'd recheck the filters just to be sure, and the other 2 suggestions, boost leak and bad turbo are also on target...

I rechecked the air filter and everything looks okay. The sensor on the side of the air box has not moved since replacement. Before replacing the air filter it had moved about 1/2". I haven't checked the fuel filter again, but I have it at the dealership this morning to see what they come back with.

Have you checked the trailer for dragging brakes or bad wheel bearings? Do you have any gauges? What's the boost? Check your intercooler boots for leaks?

I had the same problem towing my 7,000 # 5er last week... . going up a grade in the mountains I had the pedal to the floor... . about 50 was all I could get out of it... .

I miss my 2001 with the edge EZ... ..... !!!!

I strongly suggest checking your fuel filter. I headed out w/ my 7K lb TT and all was fine untill I got about 30 miles down the road. First it seemed to need a lot of throttle and then it started to miss. I changed the filter at the campground and it was fine after that. I only had 9k on the old filter.

Thanks

I've got an '04 with a mild chip, 4" exhaust and Air Raid air cleaner.

I pull a 16,000 pound horse trailer and I've never had a more powerful towing vehicle. In towing from Colorado back to Phoenix I could easily have set the cruise at 90 mph, but I was a good boy.

If your truck is not good at hauling then you've got to go back to DC. I can assure you that my Dodge is the strongest puller I've ever had and I've hauled horses all over the US for the past 40 years;... ya... I'm old but stil very cute.

Anyway, good luck in finding your problem; you actually drive the finest truck on the road today!

Good luck,

Dave in Phoenix

Boost leak

I had a boost leak after loosening one of the clamps to do some work around the engine. I couldn't believe the loss of power... and it was just a little air getting blown-by. Scared the hell out of me 'till I figured out what was happening. Re-tightened the clamp and all was well.

Pulling a 7k load you should be able to pass folks going down the road... so you really need to check things out... . that isn't right.

Thanks for all the input. I took the truck to the dealer yesterday. The truck was unloaded and they took it for their 10 mile test drive. The said that the turbo was doing its job, which I'm sure it is under no load. They told me that they talked to STAR, which told them it sounded like bad fuel. I could understand bad fuel if the truck ran bad under no-load, but the truck seems normal empty. I have the load on the truck now and I'm going to call shortly to schedule a tech to run the SCAN tool on the truck with the load. On a very small incline the truck couldn't get the load over 60!!! If they still say there is nothing wrong, what would you DC experienced fellas suggest. BTW i reopened the fuel filter and everything seemed normal. I checked the boots from turbo to intake by feeling of them, and couldn't see or feel anything out of the ordinary. Also, if they say nothing is wrong, I'm going to hook the load behind a coworkers Chevy 350 just to prove it's not the trailer.

Update on tech ride-along

I had a tech ride with me with the load. The DRB showed that when under loaded conditions under strain the injector rail pressure was dropping to 16000 psi which is well below the 21-23 Kpsi it should have. His initial thought was "fuel filter", but after telling him the filter had been changed 700 miles ago he went to his computer. He found that there is an update for the controller. I am scheduled to take the truck in tommorrow morning for the update. I will let y'all know how it goes.

On another note, :D Oo. I love this site. Oo. :D

One tank of nasty fuel could cause enough restriction in the fuel filter to cause your low power complaint.

I still wouldn't rule out the fuel filter though.

Anyway I hope you get it straightened out soon.
