6000 lbs of gravel

Hey guys,

just have to brag on 1st gens for a minute! last friday I had to haul some gravel for my new RV pad, my brother was in town to help and we needed alot of gravel so we went up to the local gravel pit, I in my 92' (6250 lbs) and my brother in his 2002 F350 (7840 lbs) we both left the pit weighing aprox 12,000! and the old girl hauled it with ease! I didn't look at the weights until later in the day and :--) I couldn't believe i hauled that much weight! and I didn't leak gravel all over the road like my bro's F*@#, the tailgates on the super duty (wimpy duty) are weak, that pig leaked soo bad, I bet he spread 500lbs of my gravel on the road, but I don't think it would be prudent to ask the city to reimburse me. any way I love my truck!

I'm gonna be needing some gravel soon, is 3 ton of gravel lumped up over the top of the bed? I've been told they load you until you say stop. ? Bill

I've got pics but having trouble posting them! but to answer your question, it stuck up a little bit in the middle but it would have been level with the bed if leveled off maybe a little under, now that I know I probably wouldn't haul that much again! but it is possible!

BTW, I had an almost identical thing happen some years back,,, a very close friend and mentor needed gravel for his place so we went to the local gravle yard.

I should have known that the 8' bucket on the loader was a bit much... . on the scale we weighed in a 11,990 lbs.



The real issue was stopping... now THAT was an eye opener.....

I've hauled plenty in a dump trailer before and those loader operators are pretty good at eyeballing how much you asked for. I place the order at the gate and they have it waiting in the bucket. When I get scaled on the way out, it's usally within a hundred pounds or so.

When I first got my 93 I routinely hauled 4600 pounds at the back of the bed. It was a bit tail heavy like that.



After sevral years of hauling those loads, I had to replace the rear brakes. The axle nuts had erroded from pressure at the contact with the bearing inner race. I first thought I would need new nuts but used the old ones after considering that new ones would have to seat against the bearings just like the old ones.



The dana 70 will handle 7000 lbs. I would be very cautious over that. As to the Cummins, the 6bta has as much horse power as the Macks, and Whites of the early 1950s.



The way my tail gate is, I probably couldn't haul any size rocks smaller than #4s. My fault though.

Most of the quarries I have been to working on their loaders have scales on the loader itself. Not short changing the operator or anything, but this helps them get acurate loads. Then they always scale you at the scale house for the bill.



I too have hauled sand, river rock, and gravel in my truck. When I had a tailgate I would lay cardboard on the bed up the tailgate to prevent loosing material. Unloading is always plenty of work though. Later this spring I will be making a trip to the quarry to get sand for my son's sandbox. We will both get to play that day!!



Anybody got a first gen tailgate??
