Need help deciding on e-brake

While on our trip to BD Dyno Days, I had located a 1994 Fleetwood Savanna 26B (28 ft. ) travel trailer. NADA average retail is $9750. 00 and High retail is $10,430. 00. It was advertised for $6300. 00. I thought I would stop and take a look. What a find! It was in close to excellent shape! The lady was selling it because her husband had a heart-attack. I bought it for $5700. 00 fully equipped with pots, pans, dishes and all the extras! It also included a Reese equalizer hitch and sway bar stabilizer. I told her I pick it up Sunday morning after BD Dyno Days.

This was on Friday, we then headed up north to see Piers for an exhaust brake. On our way to Abbotsford, I saw the exact same trailer in a RV dealers lot. Kathy and I stopped on the way back down after Dyno Days. (By the way 427 HP minus the HX40 but installed Piers turbo. ) This trailer wasn't in as good a shape as the one I had just bought, the dealer was asking $12,150. 00!

After picking the trailer up on Sunday, and going to Rob Hanson's to wire in the brake controller (Thanks Rob!), Kathy and I headed home.

I thought that if I could keep the PE Comp in level 3-1 with the trailer going up Snoqualmie Pass and stay under1200 EGT's that would be great! About 1/2 way up my EGT's were about 1100 degrees, I figured what the heck, lets see what level 4-4 does. I couldn't believe it! Cruised right over the top with the speedometer at 65 mph in 5th gear. With the 8-10% additional speed because of my 305/70R16's I was right about 70 mph and still had a ton of pedal left, and EGT's were only 1200 degrees. That just blew me away, I could hardly believe it! I got rid of my EZ and HOT PE for the Comp because I was going to get a travel trailer, the Comp is definately the right choice!

Sorry for the long post.

Hi BigBob

How is your smoke output off the line at low boost?

Does the Piers SuperTurbo&reg spool up quickly?

Thanks,

Bob

Such a deal!

Good deals are always good to hear. :D

What do you figure you're HP is with the SOTN turbo? What exhaust housing does it have?

Bob,

Thanks for the good information.

You stated, “I got rid of my EZ and HOT PE for the Comp…” Did you have the BD III’s with the HOT PE and tow similar weights? If so, what are the EGT comparisons?

I ask because I am on the fence between Stage II’s and III’s, with either the HOT PE or COMP.

Bob,

Smoke at low boost depends on level of Comp and foot pressure. With the Comp set a 3-1, I have no smoke off line at low boost no matter what I do, but have good power! Spool up is about 1500 RPM's.

Forrest,

SOTN turbo? Sorry, don't know what you mean. I have a 12cm housing on PDR turbo.

Big Daddy,

I had the BD III's with the HOT PE and EZ but never towed anything heavy. So I don't have any EGT's comparisons. The reason I went with the Comp is because I knew I was going to get a travel trailer, and because of the adjustability of the Comp. 25 different settings, I can really tune the EGT's. If I would do it again, I would still get the BD III's and the Comp!

Thanks for the reply, Bob. I saw JES on the DYNO with his COMP, 316 HP with stock injectors;) Good luck to you and the COMP:D

Hey Bob that is awesome you made out so well on the trailer deal!!! Add the PDR Turbo and Comp, you are a Happy Camper. Now all you need is some Cummins stickers to put on the back of your trailer so it'll be clear as to why that camper is being hustled up the steep grades so fast

So now that you've had both the HX40 and Piers' Turbo, what can you say about both of them? It looks like from the dyno specs you lost a few HP at the top (but that could be dyno differences too) but at your HP level you could easily give up a few HP at the top for much improved drivability down low.

What are your EGTs and boost levels cruising level at 70, with and without the trailer?

Vaughn,

I'm going to have Jason Burton make up something for the back of the trailer. Kathy and I will have to put our heads together on that. I've got a really cool saying for the back of my tailgate when Jason does it.

The HX40 really pulls hard at the top end, but you sacrafice low end torque and spool-up. 1700 rpm spoolup is too low for pulling a travel trailer.

I really like Pier's turbo, spoolup is at 1500 rpms, EGT's at WOT are up maybe 100 degrees. It is much more streetable! (Better performance for street driving) Definately better for towing a trailer. As far as the HP loss, I will have to go to Shelley's and run on the DynoJet to compare with the HX40. Even with the 26 HP difference between the DynoJet and the Mustang Dynos, I'm not complaining. I figure if I Dynoed on the Mustang around 400 HP it would be great. Everyone says the Mustang is a little stingy compared to the DynoJet on HP.

EGT's while towing on a flat road were around 775 to 850, boost would vary but is seemed to be about 10# cruising on flat road. Mind you this was about 70 mph.

I can see why people who tow a lot go for the 4:10 gears. At 70 mph, I was right at 1975 rpm's, about 150 rpm's under the power range. If I were driving at 60 mph, I would be right at the edge of lugging the mighty Cummins in 5th gear.

I did figure up the milleage coming home with the trailer, it worked out to be right at 11 mpg. I didn't think that was too bad going 70 with 6000# behind.

Haven't seen Papa Joe, called him about Dyno Days, he didn't think he would make it.

Sorry you couldn't make it to Dyno Days, you were missed!

Sounds great, Big Bob! That trailer deal seems close to a once in a lifetime deal, congratulatulations.

It doesn't sound like the extra load is going to slow you down at all ;) .
