Anyone have any experience with the automatic shift mechanism in the column? I can't get mine into park unless I go under the hood and move the lever up with a screw driver. The shift lever moved up and down if actuated under the hood, but will not pull the pawl upward from inside the cab. The only illustration I could find of the assembly is poor at best, and of course the Chiltons has nothing to offer. I know I will have to pull the steering wheel, but will I have to remove the entire column?

Generally speaking:
  1. Does everything move smoothly and freely? Is there rust or corrosion that inhibits movement?
  2. Are the various linkage joints worn enough to produce excessive play that effectively lengthened the linkage?
  3. Does the gear indicator 'exactly' match what is actually selected?

I'd sooner suspect a 'stretched' linkage (from corrosion or wore-out bushing) rather than a problem in the steering column.

Yes everything moves freely, no rust or corrosion. The selector doesn't match because I've replaced the original 2 speed with a TH350. I'm not having any trouble shifting gears. There is a pawl that lifts when you pull the shift lever towards you to go into park. That pawl isn't moving even though the shift lever is. If I lift the pawl at the bottom of the column (under the hood) the shift lever goes up. I'm picturing an internal ball/socket affair at the end of the shift lever that is worn out. Once the repair procedure starts I won't be able to move the pickup, so I'm hoping someone either has a viable diagram or has repaired a similar problem on a vintage Chevy.

Back in the day I fixed many worn steering columns damaged ,worn shift tubes, bearings, bushings, you name it.Some columns will have a set screw that is accesable through the opening where the lever goes in.If the tube can be pushed upward from under the hood this may be an issue. It takes a long allan wrench to reach it.You may have better luck finding a parts blow up from one of the restoration parts supplier

That helps, thanks.

I should have known there are FSMs for vintage vehicles. I ordered a reprint shop manual and a factory assembly manual from Classic Parts, Inc. Thanks Bob for getting me into the search engine.
