Am I right that both trans are different? and asins only in chassis cabs etc. . how do they compare to each other etc. . I have heard tons of good press regarding the 68 and i have a friend here with a new 5500 and he LOVES his asin. . any input. . i wonder how it will how up? an dhow it compares to a Allison 1000 internal wise?

Thanks,

Deop

You're right: the aisin is a different transmission and it's only in the C&C's.

It's a 6-speed, like the 68RFE, but has PTO.

Automatic Transmissions Ratios

68RFE ratios:

1 - 3. 231:1

2 - 1. 837:1

3 - 1. 410:1

4 - 1. 000:1

5 - 0. 816:1

6 - 0. 625:1

R - 4. 444:1

Aisin ratios:

1 - 3. 74:1

2 - 1. 96:1

3 - 1. 34:1

4 - 1. 00:1

5 - 0. 77:1

6 - 0. 63:1

R - 3. 54:1

Cool Thanks for the ratios... I am wonderr how well they will hold big power. . ie and what may break. . from what I've heard both types are REALLY good. . my friend absolutely loves his Aisin...

I just hadn't heard much from any one on it. . I have heard the 68 is steering wheer shiftable or something not sure if the Aisin is etc. . if the exhaust brake works the same with both etc. .

Thanks

I have a local friend who is a factory trained Dodge diesel mechanic. He said the Aisen is the best automatic made for high HP/Torque engines.

The major difference in the two, is the Aisen has planetary gear packs instead of the 68RFE having clutch packs.

I for a fact know that drag race cars have used trans. (Lenco) with planetary gears (some with clutches, some with torque converters) for many years and they are known,through-out the industry, to be pretty much bullet proof.

If I wanted an automatic, and given a choice, I would definitely go with the Aisin, even if I had to buy the bigger truck.

Rabbittree,

I've read nothing but good about the Aisin and also the MOPAR 68RFE. Owners seem to love both and I've read no reports of any problems with either.

The pickups using the MOPAR automatic have a tiny thumb switch on the end of the shifter handle which allows the driver to select or change gears with a flick of his thumb. A very nice feature I wish the cab and chassis trucks offered with the Aisin.

I was surprised to learn recently on the TDR website, the "exhaust brake" in 6. 7L engines is actually a sliding nozzle in the turbocharger that effectively closes the exhaust when the throttle pedal is lifted. The exhaust brake feature is fully integrated with the automatic transmission and is controlled by the ECM in either version of the new trucks.

In my new 3500 c&c the eb is applied very gently in normal "drive" mode but is much more aggressive in the "tow/haul" mode. Tow/Haul locks out sixth gear OD so the truck remains in 5th OD. When the driver lifts his foot the brake is more aggressive and the ECM downshifts through the gears as the truck slows so exhaust braking is very aggressive.

Ray,

That was the same reasoning I used. I didn't really want a cab and chassis but the Aisin was the main reason I bought one. The second reason was I believe the rear spring sets on Gen III 3500 pickups are too soft to carry their rated loads. I permanently bent the rear springs on my '06 pulling heavy trailers and had to have them rearched and a leaf added.

Glad to hear you took delivery your new C&C. Maybe we can see some pics of your new rig? What do you think of the new 6. 7 and the HP difference from your 06? Love mine and I have never regretted making the decision for the 6. 7.

I was attending a class not long ago by Allison... I didn't know this but they shared with me that Allison is used by GM for their trucks and Allison uses the name for their transmissions.....

There are now 2 different transmissions designed by 2 sets of engineers using the same name and in one case the same model number... . What is used by GM and their division has no interchangeable parts or software with the transmissions sold by Allison that are used in other light trucks behind various engines...

The engineer that taught the class told us that hardware and programming are now completely different and their feeling is that GM has taken steps to reduce cost and performance of what Allison feels is a great product... .

I'm very pleased with the Aisin in my 5500 to date... we have considered putting another transmission cooler on it and a temperature gauge but decided not to do it after one the guys on the TDR and I had a conversation about it... . he's using his truck towing and has the gauge and no cooler... other than the factory set up... . he's shared with me that the transmission works very well for him towing and additional cooling is not needed nor has he had any high temperature problems... . so with this in mind we are going to leave ours stock... .

A CM bed is being installed today and I should have it back by the end of the day tomorrow. I had to drive it 400 miles Monday, partly in the rain, so it is dirty right now. If weather permits I'll get it washed by the weekend and try to take some good digital photos and post them.

Mine won't be as fancy as yours. I bought a basic CM "SS" flatbed with full rear skirt and storage boxes mounted in front of and behind the wheels.

.

Harvey,

I'm looking forward to a whole string of reports on this new truck of yours.

Get busy boy !... . :)

Ray,

I don't plan to return to RV transporting so I won't be rolling up the miles at the rate of 13,000 miles each month like I was so I won't have much to report.

I will post what I know as soon as I get it set up and have the opportunity to hook up and take a little trip with the 5er.

EB is the guy to go to for information on a "working" cab and chassis. He has in the neighborhood of 120k on his already.

I'm not that far along yet, had a slow month in Feb. but I am over 116k. Have a load of stabilizers and collars going to Houston tomorrow. Another 300 miles on it by noon. Just changed the transmission fluid in the Aisin over the weekend. Sure wish they had the same pan gaskets the other transmissions had. That cork so and so had me talking to my self before I got it back on. The fluid looked and smelled like new, but it was time for a change. I don't believe it has ever gotten hot and I've given it a reason to several times. That is a tough transmission.

116+k miles and no problems, I'm happy.

Good to hear from you again EB. I was thinking we hadn't had a report from you in awhile but that gave me confidence because I knew it meant your truck was still troublefree or we would have heard from you if you'd had a problem.
