I am changing the trans fluid and filters. The sump filter includes a new seal the installs into the transmission and the the sump filter snaps into that seal. How important is it that this seal be replace? The filter seems as tight in the old seal as the new one does not installed, bur getting the old one out seems to amount to needing to take a chisel to it for removal.

Theres always the possibility that the filter could fall out... . Only seen it once, but thats not how i would do it... . Try to use a cotter pin puller tool, seems to do the job.

Do a search on 68RFE filter. Another member did this and had some regret about replacing the seal (if I remember correctly).

Well I changed the seal, not to hard, used a medium sized screw driver and a couple taps of the hammer had it out. Gettting the new one in was a little harder, used the back of a socket about the size of seal, put the extension inside and used it to drive the seal in.

I did do a search before posting but didn't see much.
