I've collected some detailed 6BT and VE44 pics and thought I'd post 'em up here in case anyone was wondering what some of the internal and exterior views of a 6BT looked like. I also included some repair/maintenance dialogue along the way.

First off - the RC's new heart freshly painted in Cummins beige enamel -

partly disassembled w/ front cover, tappet, and rocker covers off -

#ad

front case opened up -

THIS is where the KDP lives - mine hadn't budged at all... but I was still gonna kill it ;)

#ad

here's the tab from PDR...

#ad

... and installed...

... more to follow...

had the whole engine blasted with plastic media and it cleaned up fantastic - ready to paint, but I also re-sealed the major components before painting, so some of it had to come apart.

Pulled the vacuum and power steering pumps - come out as an assembled unit -

#ad

the hole afterwards...

#ad

then pulled the pump out; first pull the gear off the front, simple -

#ad

then the injector lines, then the three bolts and the pump comes right out - here's the pump from all views -

the tappet cover also has a noise-reduction cover which is simply bolted to the side of the tappet cover. I don't think the tappet cover can come off without pulling the pump... at least not real easily.

#ad

rocker covers removed - ready to adjust the valves...

Intake heater grid with inlet horn removed -

... I just got to thinkin' that I had all these photos of the sub assembly's, and there's a lot of folks that want to get into the maintenance stuff but aren't sure what things look like and/or what to expect when it all comes apart, so figured I'd post up some pics of the guts n stuff to try to aleviate some of the guess work.

I have to say, the engineers sure made a 6BT easy to maintain.

Here's what the pistons and rods look like - they're gynormous

#ad

Look at how thick and meaty the wrist pins and rods are!

#ad

#ad

Piston dome - note the pistons are dished, like cavernously dished - serious physics went into the flame travel and heat expansion. Note how tall the piston is compared to say a regular gasser - there's lot of meat on top to both disipate the heat and contain the cylinder pressure and boost. Seriously stout stuff.

#ad

I don't have a pic, but the crank is about 150 lbs by itself.
