We have a lot of these engines at work. Sac International parking shuttle buses. What do you need to know. I work on them very little myself, but we have info on them.

these buses are in fl,and guess what,we have no natural gas within 100 miles of the buses. i want to sell the engines or the buses, they do have some gas in them. anybody have a natural gas well on there place and need a good truck engine? randy

Cummins makes a foray into the natural gas compressor drive business every few years. There are a few packagers in the Four Corners area (Farmington, NM) who are building compressor sets with 5. 9L Cummins natural gas fueled engine drivers.

It could be fairly easily converted to run on Propane. The componets are similar as I have done gas to natural gas, gas to propane, dual fuel (gas/propane selectable) and propane to natural gas, natural gas to propane conversions for years on forklifts. It may could even be converted back to diesel, but would be pretty involved to do so as compression is lowered (by dished out pistons) for the various gasses. We have a boom lift with a gasoline/propane dual fuel system with a Kubota engine. It is the converted diesel, just like the Cummins is. Has a distributer where the "power screw" would be and a cover plate where the injection pump top cover goes and of course spark plugs in the injector holes.

thanks for the info,i wondered if it could be run on propane. best thing to do is pull the engines and crush the buses i guess. what kind of milage would they get on propane in a pickup?propane is kinda high here! randy

If you pull them from the bus, make sure you get all of the electronics with them. These things are crank triggered, no distributor. They could probably be made to run on propane, but would not be worth it to convert back to diesel.

its way too much work to convert them back to diesel,hell,6bts are cheap! i knew they were crank triggered, they have coil packs too, pretty cool. i guess you could run them on gasoline too, with some work!they would make a great genny engine on propane.

Natural gas Cummins sure look strange with spark plugs. I used to be a District Manager for a natural gas company and was one of the founding members of our CNG program. We got into converting municipal water wells to natural gas fueled engines and on some of the larger wells we'd spec Cummins 5. 9s, they worked great, saved the cities money on electric demand charges and we sold a crap load of additional gas.
