hey, guys I,m the new owner of a 01 2500 with the NV 5600 my first diesel :D Also a new member of TDR. have had it a few months, I,ve been having a problem with 3rd,4th and 5th shifting a lite grinding and klunking into gear this seems to happen when the truck is cold or hot but not all the time. when I took it to the dealer every thing was up to Temp on test drive an running fine they checked it out and said it was OK color good on the fluid. the transmission wont down shift into 5th or 4th(between 60 and 45mph) doesnt matter if im in 4H or 2WD. when it does it shifts hard and grinds or not at all have to slow down and slip it to 3rd lite grind going in only happened 3 or 4 times no load . 159745Km on it still has warranty till 160K. thinking possible worn clutch. Any suggestions?

That is a common problem on the 5600's, mine was replaced because of that exact problem. Some people have had luck changing out the OEM fluid and going with an aftermarket synthetic for better shifting, myself included. Any fluid other than OEM has the real possibility of causing warranty issues. The fluids I have heard that are working ok are Amsoil 5W-30motor oil, Red Line MTL, and Royal Purple Synchromax (my choice). How you shift can effect engagement, try double clutching it or shifting slowly. Idont think your clutch is the problem.

Clutch or syncros. Find another dealer to take it to and YOU drive them around to show that it grinds, not their word when they say they drove it around the parking lot to check it out.

If it is the clutch, waranty will not help you. If it is anything else, get it done.

try another dealer and if it happens more when the truck is cold, take the truck to the dealer the night before so when the take it for a drive everything will be cold. I guess I must be lucky but my 6spd shifts very nice, nothing has changed since I got it at 20k till now at 61k:cool: Dean

Have discided with the info I got to try another dealer Im going to drop it off tonight and do a cold test drive with me. If that dont work Ill try changing the fluid maybe they will see something in the fluid to convince them that their is a problem going to try one of the suggested fluids. Any one know what is the best aftermarket transmission fluid ?? Thanks, Franco

If you use an aftermarket fluid it will void your warrenty. I use Redline mtl and it smoothed out my transmission. No problems. Then again with my mods,I don't have a warrenty issue.

"The dealer has a synthetic they can put in for trucks that tow"

PLeavit,

What oil is this? As far as I know only the original fill oil type is authorized for use in NV5600 transmissions.

Are you thinking of the manufacturer recommendation to use synthetic oil in the Dana 80 axle if the vehicle is used for heavy towing?

Could be the Pilot bearing not to sure though. Took it for a drive today tried Double clutching was pretty smooth when warm but when it was cold it was still a little rough but no grinds some gears still tuff to get into. Will know better in the morning.

I haven,t had mine since new it sure was'nt doing it when I bought it. the temp out side was -20c when bought. Since it started to warm up here last couple days its not doing it as much. the dealer did road test without me was at work. Did what I specified they found nothing did basic insp havent pulled it yet said I could pick it up as if they were done with it  Outside temp might have some effect it was +6c at time of road test. Dipping below zero tonight will try again tomorow. Still with out me but have no choice. Just not saticfied with thier answers!! Does anyone know that if noted before warranty's up will it cover it if the transmission goes after the power train warranty is up? Thanks, in advance

Long story srt, Warranty is up, road test transmission shiffted ok, techs can't find any thing wrong with it, waitting till something more perdomenent happens :( till then Dumping OEM fluid and try RED LINE MTL, AMS or Royal purpel. one of the 3 to try and smooth that ride:cool:
