6spd manual vs 6spd "HD" manual trans?

I was looking on the Dodge website for building a Ram 3500 and noticed the $400 optional 6spd HD manual transmission. Is that the NV5600 or a different version of the G56? Thanks..... Jim

That is the NV5600 - pay no attention, the site sucks... The G56 is here to stay

Thanks tomeygun. I was looking for a certain truck but could only find it in Colorado. It had a "HD" 6spd according to the sticker. I asked for a dealer qoute but was told that it was a Federal emissions truck and not a California emissions truck and as such could not be sold to a California address. I thought the new trucks were all 50 state legal?... . Thanks,..... Jim

If you see a truck with the $400 HD option, it's a NV5600 transmission. With the CTD option, the $400 HD NV5600 transmission option was required. Later when they started with the G56's, they dropped the extra $400 charge. That's why everyone disregards the $400 HD option now that the G56 is the only transmission you can get other than what's currently in inventory.

I'm from colorado and we had one hell of a time finding an nv5600 dually. we bought it about 3 weeks ago. We got quoted a better deal at one dealership but had to pay more at another to get the right truck. I hope the g56 turns out to be reliable. We run really big loads, and have never broken a nv 5600, so we didn't want to change. On one run I went through Dallas and found an NV5600 truck w/ 3700 miles on it. The dealership claimed to have sold it to a customer that was moving to CA and had to buy it back because it didn't meet the CA emissions. They tried to get new money out of it, and wasted alot of my time finding out why it had mileage on it. maybe the CA emissions is that strict or it's a way for CA to protect it's dealers and force you to buy within CA?Another way to tell the trannies apart is the g56 has reverse on thdrivers side and down, the nv5600 is to the passenger and up.

BTW - I just ran another search and found about 125 trucks (AT LEAST, I stopped counting) within 250 miles that have the NV5600... So their still out there!!!!!

I just got an 05. When I was shopping, I was about to put a deposit on one with a G56. My friend (who works for Dodge) called and said "DON'T DO IT!!!!" He said don't by a truck without the NV5600. According to him the G56 is a Mercedes trans with some type of dual fly wheel set up. He said alot of trucks with that setup have been coming back for transmission problems. I don't know the details other than that. I was able to find a truck w/the NV and have not had any problems.

Sorry no, the search was from me..... BUT Good news

I found 8 1-tons (3 dually/LB) and 27 3/4 tons (7 long bed) WITH CA. Emissions

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the NV5600 shift up and right for reverse while the G56 shifts to the left for reverse? Might be an easy way to tell trannies apart... . at least from the drivers seat!!!!! :-laf

Yes the nv 5600 has reverse away from the driver and up. Two other ways to tell are the g56 has an aluminum housing, and when looking at the window sticker the nv5600 reads something like Heavy duty 6speed and has a 400. 00 price in the option column. The only bad thing I've noticed is that some of the remaining 5600 trucks are old enough to have the plastic intercooler. Ours did. Hey banks what about a super deal for tdr members on the technicooler.

So what is wrong with the G56? We have been through this before and determined that the g56 was a good transmission. They did have an oil leak in the beginning and Dodge had a recall and fixed the problem. I have the NV5600 and have been happy with it, but I think I would have been just as happy with the g56. :-{}

G56 Vs NV5600 Ratios Anyone???

My first post to the TDR... .



I'm seriously shopping for a '05 CDT w/6Sp w/3. 73 (after seeing the '06, I decided the time is NOW to buy (it's UGLY), plus with the deals, I can't resist!) I found one that floats my boat, but with all I've read over the last couple of days about G56 OD not being as high as the NV, I'm wondering if anyone can post the 1-6 ratios of both the G56 and NV5600??? I think that would help me make up my mind to buy or not. You see, I have a '98 12V with NV 4500 and Gearvendor's OD and a 3. 54, and I love the way the truck criuses in 5th Over... That said, I DON't intend to install another OD unit EVER for many reasons (email me privately if you want to know the gory deatils), so top speed cruising is a major concern of mine.

Cough... gag... lol... A "super deal" from Banks is probably 3x what something as good or better from PDR would cost. (and yes, PDR does have their own intercoolers now). Not to mention, Banks probably isn't too fond of TDR anyways, due to all the negative publicity on here.
